Hi,
I would like to build a 20 footer sailing boat in Singapore.
Do I need a license?
Any idea where I can build it?
Best, Matt

Why Singapore!?
Are you aiming for the luxury end?
I met a couple of English guys who had recently had their boat built to order in Indonesia, like a 60ft outrigger, and sailed it from Indon up to Thailand, around the region and were en route back from Malaysia to Bali when I ran into them. They said Indon was the best and most economical for build-to-order.
But I expect if you're going high-end, it might not be the place to do it!

I don't think it is high end.
I picked up a plan to build a boat using stitch and glue technique in KSA
but I am planning to come to Singapore in 2012.
Any concerns about building it in Singapore?

Where would you do it? On your front drive, in your garden? I imagine you just need the space.
Getting to sail it is another matter I know nothing about.

I am more concern of the license.
I heard that they want licenses for most things in Singapore.
Who should I contact if I wanted to do a DIY boat?
I learned sailing when I was young and has spent most of my youth
on the water.

I really doubt there is such a thing as a boat-building license. SG can be strict but it's not as bad as Cuba such that have a fear you will try and escape the island!
You could contact a SGn yacht-club and ask them, but I expect they might think it a slightly odd question.

Thank you for your inputs.
The USA is planning to license boat making as more of these DIY boats are hitting the market. Interesting that Singapore is not following.
Thank you again.

If there were more space so that it could become widespread, they probably would. But, I think you'll find that you're biggest problem is finding a space big enough to build one.
Having said that, if Singapore sees a way to make money from you, they'll certainly try.

if you been to Marina's here, as I have seen, even boats have to be lifted off the water and stacked 2 to 3 high .. that's how much space is at a premium here ..
Will Singapore allow DIY boat builders ? yeah, if you can afford to leave the space required ..
I dunno where I read, but somebody said he built his boat in his basement .. and everybody was like "YOU HAVE A BASEMENT ????"
Welcome to Singapore ..
Alternates for Boat building in Indonesia is Philippines, and Sri Lanka ..

Actually, there are places where you could build a boat. Rent a Black & White out in Seletar Camp (not too many left as they tore down most for the new Airtropolis) But I had a 14 X 22 foot workshop I build in my back yard the 15 years I lived there. I also and a 10 x 30 covered patio on the side of the house with an 8" concrete slab that I built there as well. Didn't build any boats, but did restore several cars including spraypainting them. Built fibreglass replacement body panels for the Mini Cooper there as well. Had a complete woodworking shop as well. Of course, these places are a lot more expensive today than when I lived out there. (400/mo compared to minimum of 3K/ UP now). But there are places you could conceivably build a 20 footer without too much problem provided you have the clams to support the habit and location costs.

Hi,
Are there places that we can park the boats in the water?
I heard that there is a eastern anchorage with a breakwater,
can you park the boats there?
I have worked with many schools, do you know of any vocational
institutes that will welcome DIY practitioners to work with their students?
I can share my experience with routers, drills, etc.

You moor a boat rather than 'park' it.
Google on
boat mooring singapore
or
yacht marina singapore
or
yacht club singapore
