Part Time Maid - Hidden Costs?

Post by februus » Tue, 01 Jun 2010 5:14 pm

I was wondering, when you hire a part time maid through an agency, are there any hidden costs to be aware of?

I was thinking of the following:

Who pays income tax/CPF if any?
What happens in the case of an accident in my home - do I need any kind of insurance?

Couldn't see this anywhere else and wanted to know before contacting agencies...

If you are hiring a part-time maid from an agency, then you pay the agency a set amount/hour normally. The agency pays the help as she is on their payroll. You don't have to pay anything other than the agency's invoice for the number of hours worked.

In this case it is like with any other service provider: replace "part time maid" with "cleaning services". You are not an employer (as per legal employment terms) of such maid, you are just her client/customer. You do not need to take care about CPF etc. when you request aircon service or a new shirt from a tailor. The agency is either dealing with logistics only or they are the true employers of the maids in some cases, then you are a client of the agency and still not the employer.

You can try the companies listed on my links page below. Beware of loan approaches via this site by maids themselves. Anybody offering to be a parttime maid directly, be sure to check for an NRIC and not a work permit. No work permit holder is allowed to work anywhere except in the employer's residence (they can't even work in the employers store or a relatives house). If you are caught employing an illegal worker you and her will be deported. Not good.
