Queries about policies in renouncing pr

I am currently an A level graduate, waiting to be enlisted in NS in early May. I have got quite a good intention to renounce my PR status to pursue my studies first before coming back to Singapore to serve NS. I would like to check to clarify if this is actually possible.

Also, I would like to ask for the procedures in renouncing my PR status. Do I go to ICA first, before notifying CMPB? How many weeks in advance should I renounce my PR status?

You cannot renounce your PR. It's too late. You would have had to do that before you turned 13 years old. Now, unless you do your NS you will be classified as a NS deserter and should you ever be caught in Singapore you will be arrested, jailed and upon your release, made to do NS. Singapore does not give deferment to do tertiary educations outside of Singapore and only will do so for selected Schools (government) in Singapore. My son goes into NS in May as well. He had a 5 year deferment here while he was in NAFA.

Aww. Is that so? I have friends who did renounce their PRs weeks before they enlist into NS. Aren't PRs allowed to renounce their PRs at any time they want?

Sure, you can renounce your PR at any time and for any reason.

But the government's line in such a case is clear: You will NEVER be able to study/work/live in Singapore again.

I fully recognise the consequences of renouncing my PR status. And that is why I am considering to come back to do my NS after I finished my studies. I am not exactly sure if this is allowed.

Didn't think so. Sure, come on back after you finish your studies. They will welcome you with open arms.

Unfortunately, those arms will have black armbands with the letters MP on the side of them, or they will be wearing white helmets with MP in red letters on the sides. After a couple of years, you will be released and then allowed to complete your NS. After which you will probably be escorted to Changi Airport to ensure you leave the country. You will then be deemed "persona non grata" here.



Obviously you DON'T recognice the consequences of renouncing at such a late date.

Add "and never come back" to the end of your sentence and it is a true statement!

You cannot deferred NS for tertiary education. Deferment are only allowed for Diploma or GCE A Certification or equivalent. It does not matter if you are 21 and still doing Diploma , you will get deferment. Once you go for tertiary it will be a no go sign..
You state renounce now and return your Blue IC at ICA and you will get 2 weeks SVP . Your student or LTSVP pass will not be approve hence you will need to pack your bags within that time to go .
Yes, you can come for a visit but you will never gain employment/PR if you skip NS. Think hard before you decide to do this.
