My maid is sick. Need advice please.

Post by tanusa » Thu, 22 Apr 2010 10:25 am

Hello. We've had a flu-like bug running through our
household, and our maid is now sick. I had to go to the
doctor the other day with the same symptoms and was
given antibiotics, which really helped. Obviously, I want
to take my helper to a doctor as well. I'm new to Singapore
and am wondering if I should take her to my doctor, or
is there a particular clinic she should go to that is covered
by her insurance. Obviously, i want to get her the care
she needs. Any advice is appreciated.

Any clinic or doctor is good enough, though i don't see why you cannot use your own at most it will be 25$ to 50$. Though take her to the nearest asap.

Thanks for your reply. I'm happy to take her to my doctor if that's what I need to do. I just wanted to know if there is a clinic that accepts the insurance we have for her, as the bill for my visit was almost $150 (that did include the antibiotics.) And yes, I'll take her today. She's napping now, so I'm letting her sleep.

150$ appears to be extreme to me for a bout of flue and I live locally and use the clinics.

I feel that becuase you are an expat, you are using recommended expat doctors....which tend to be more pricey than the normal clinic doctor for locals becuase they target expats and tourists...it also depends on the area of the practise, due to rental rates. Around Orchard Rd would be sky high prices for example.

In 5 years here, the only charges over a 100$ has been from the general hospital, without medication. With consultation fees around 80 to 100$ for a specialist . Local consultation shouldn't be more than 25$ medicine can vary, normally you would pay the doctor first and claim the fee back from the insurance, best to ask at reception what the procedure is.

I called the agency we used to hire our helper and asked about how her insurance works. Basically, her insurance only covers accidents, hospitalization and surgery. It does not cover regular consultations with a doctor. So I need to take her to any doctor and pay the full bill. I will take her to my doctor this afternoon and get her what she needs.

I just wanted to post this update in case anyone has this same question in the future. I find healthcare here very different from home. In some ways it's much simpler. But that can be confusing for someone coming from a very complicated and expensive system, LOL!

Expat clinics offer a special rate to helpers... if your helper has been living in Singapore awhile she will no doubt have a clinic that she goes to for her check ups and may feel more comfortable going to.

We just had the same problem, three emergency runs to Glenagles in the middle of the night. Mycoplasma bug has set off her asthma which caused other complications. As you found out you cannot claim day to day medical expenses, only hospital stays and surgery, but keep the receipt because should she require hospitalization then you can claim the previous visits.
