I'm no shopping mall expert, but...

Post by aster » Tue, 13 Apr 2010 5:35 pm

... how can a mall expect to be successful if it has:

- NO food court
- NO multiplex cinema
- NO direct (underground) link to MRT
- NO supermarket

Apart form the SIM LIM typ specialist malls, how can a general mall survive and do well without ANY of the above? I mean look at Vivo or Plaza Singapura, they have ALL of the above and seem to be doing extremely well.

So is it a surprise that Orchard Central isn't exactly packing in the crowds?

they seem to be banking on elitism.

Maybe they're hoping to make up in Value what they don't in volume! I haven't been there yet so can't say.

Is there a 1$ store

Centre point is also not so busy, though i am happy about that, because i can always get a seat in the food court, even at weekends!

The Heeren is another one that is turning into a ghost town. Losing HMV as a tenant really ripped the soul out of that mall...

I beg to differ... Have you been to Parkway Parade recently?

Parkway have a very high concentration of traffic with little competition, and it appears to be quite on some days now. Orchard Rd is another kettle of fish with lots of malls competing...though its the rents that need to be drastically reduced in my opinion.

My statistics show spending is down by 50% on food & beverage, that's from a verbal survey I cover at the exhibitions in Suntec. So more shops will close, if rents don't drop.

Though travel Asia was a sell out, which means Singaporeans are taking advantage of the Sing $ strength and getting away, rather then spending here.

Been to Orchard to stare in confusion at all the escalators in Ion.

Those other two new malls on Orchard- I don't even know what they are are called, and have not been

Yes Ion appears to be empty most of the time too. I know someone paying 26k a month for rental and it just isn't pulling the crowd. With the $ the way it is, I can't see many tourists coming

Ouch! Which is why I don't do silly designer goods.

Because your huge mark-up is simply their rent.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate quality. I wear an 80's Cartier from my 'heady days' lol. In mid-life tho, I just see 'big-mall', and flashy-unit and equate it to the slot for me to put the credit card into.

No thanks!

City Square Mall is quite empty too, but then it's new. A pretty good place though, with a good mix of restaurants, shops, a Fairprice, and direct MRT link. It's so pleasant to walk around a mall as empty as this one. :)

Not sure we're talking about the same place - but then again your empty and mine might be slightly different... Have you seen the queue of cars to get into the parking lot over the weekend? Sometimes it reaches back into Kitchener Road!
