Post by CVanessa » Sun, 25 Oct 2009 11:05 am

Is there any other portuguese in Singapore?

I'm searching for new friends in this country, I'm staying here for long so i need to know more people.

I'm a 26 years old portuguese girl and I speak english, portuguese, french and spanish.

Hello, you are the one who can clarify one linguistic problem I have.
How do you spell italian "Ciao" in Portugese and in Spanish? "Chao" or "Chau".
There's famous tango of Piazzolla: "Chau Paris". Is it "Hello" or "Bye" or both?

@Vanessa:
finally a portuguese face around! i ve been looking for you guys all over the place! as i cant send PM in this forum and i dont want to post my email like this, it would be nice if you send me your contact

@pablito:
in spanish it will be chau, though chao is used too - i think no one makes a lot of fuss how to spell chau...
in portuguese from brazil it will rather be chao, as ending o-s are pronounced as u-s

ahhaha it's ok, well ciao is italian, and usually means hello and goodbye, can you show me the music lyric, so it would be easy to understand the meaning of ciao, i guess it means "hello paris".

About the Portuguese "Ciao", we use "Chau" to say goodbye, and in spanish the same, but you can't write it, it's a colloquial expression, an interjection to say goodbye.

We only write that expression when we're chatting or sending an email to a friend, that situation we write "Xau".

hope you're clarified

:)
xau

Thank you guys for your answers, and so fast!
Alas, there's no lyric in this tango, what about music score - will it tell you something? :)
It is so nice tango, like most of Piazzolla's tangos.
I play now it with violinist.
Question was how to put it in the Program. Now I know: "Chau Paris"

Bye

Hi Vanesa,

Even knowing that this post is a bit old I'll reply. Maybe you are still looking for some portuguese speaker.

I am Brazilian and i've been living in Singapore for 1 month. I'm still looking forward to make new friends. In case u wanna be in touch just drop an email at [email protected]

Hey Pablito, just adding a comment, in portuguese "bye" is "tchau". Generally this word is not used in normal conversations. People rather use "tchau tchau" (yes, bye twice, like bye bye lol) and also "Até logo" which is almost the same as "see you later"

Cheers,
Thiago
