what is the school cut off age?

Post by jamboree » Tue, 12 Jan 2010 3:46 pm

I am getting very confused as most school websites i visited do not have this basic info. My daughter is 5 yrs old and in August 2010 she will still be five as she turns 6 in october. She is in KG 2 and ideally should be moving ot Yr 1 but most schools it seems are taking 5 yr olds in kG 2! i really dont want her to repeat KG 2.
She will be so bored! Any help is appreciated. do the indian schools also have the same cut off date?

thank you!

Local school
Primary 1 start from 7 yrs old.

It is base on the yr the kids born not their birthday mth or date.

Of course school don't have these basic information. It was mention in MOE web.

As you mention your kid going to 5 yrs old on Aug 2010. She should be born on 2005.

Her primary 1 should be 2012

Hi,
I think the above reply is incorrect. As per my understanding,a child should have turned 6 to enter Primary 1 .
The MOE website states that 'a child born between 2 January 2003 and 1 January 2004 has to be registered at the 2009 Primary One Registration Exercise for admission to Primary One in January 2010.'
So,ideally your child can enter P1 in Jan 2011,as she would have turned 6 in Oct 2010.

In Indian schools-
GIIS -They are pretty flexible about age entry level requirement. They conduct aptitude tests to figure out which level the child fits into.Your child shouldnt have a problem as she has been attending KG. You can call them and find out.
NPS- They require the child to have turned 6 by April to admit the child to Grade 1 the same year.So again,as in local schools,ur child will qualify to go to Grade 1 in 2011.
DPS- not sure abt the age requirement.

thank you RSQ and therat ....
it seems i dont have have much option here other than GIIS it seems.
I dont feel that I will wait till she is 7 yrs to starts class 1. It will be too late....2 yrs later! that would be really too much...
Any other schools any one knows which are a bit flexible on age?
It seemed she had a good chance to get into the UWC east campus but they are very strict with age restrictions and she will have to repeat KG 2 and then go on to YR 1 in 2011 end....!

sigh! i hope i get this sorted out :(

My daughter is a december baby--and was six when she started P1 in January 2008. She turned 7 in December 2008 (still in P1) and started P2 at 7. They student must turn seven or be seven in the year they begin Primary 1 in the local system.
