Travel Vaccination

Post by candrex » Wed, 14 Oct 2009 5:26 pm

Hello,

Does anyone have a recommendation for a clinic or doctor with low vaccination prices?

I'll be travelling in the future and need to get a series of different vaccines. My current clinic only got the following prices (excluding tax):

Hep A & B - 3 shots for 390 SGD
Japanese Encephalitis - 3 shots for 180 SGD
Rabies - 3 shots for 210 SGD
Malarone (Malaria) 1 pill/day for 7 SGD
...

Thanks a lot!

antimalarials at $7/pill? those are crack prices! ask for generics.

go to a public hospital's vaccination clinic (eg, NUH, TTSH...)

Thanks for the info! Will ask at the hospital!

Btw - 'Malarone' pills at pharmacies like Watson for example charge even more - 7.95 SGD.

you don't need brand name antimalarials.

if you went to watson's and asked for anti-histamines, they will proffer you the expensive ones because of bigger margins.

tell the pharmacist you want generics and you want it cheap.

they will hand them over meekly and it works just as well.

Malarone (atovaquone) is still patented, so there are no generics available. It may be possible to get different malaria meds at a lower price though.

Do you really need the rabies and Japanese encephalitis shots though? You're highly unlikely to catch either unless you're planning on spelunking and paddy farming.

Well - I'm better safe than to catch something. I will be backpacking to countries which are a big step behind when it comes to medical things (Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar...) and clinics may not always be available quickly if you travel the countryside.

Anyway - I've gone for a package with my doctor despite the price - at least I really get everything that I need. Some other clinics/doctors don't have all the vaccination or charge even higher prices. Malarone was also more expensive at Watsons and other 'street' pharmacies.

Thanks for all the answers!
