Post by iamzsy » Mon, 16 Mar 2009 12:37 am

days ago, i was reached by a recruitor from a singapore it service company, he saw my resume on monster.com and thought my background is fit with their needs.

i am a mainland china citizen, currently in Shanghai.

5.5 years in IT industry, 4 years and 1+ years in 2 large multinational companies.

with Java, Oracle, telecom domain.....

is that possible to earn around SGD 5500~6000/month *13 months yearly?

my currently salary is around SGD 50,000 yearly in shanghai.

Hi,

and what can I expect, just after getting a Master's degree in IT in a good but unknown French school?
Currently in Singapore for an internship, I don't think you can do much here with less than $4000/month.

I guess it's all relative. The median income in Singapore is around 5K/household (usually with both spouses working).

More details please.

You said, "Java, Oracle, telecom domain".

So are you an expert in Java? Oracle which application?

-Java J2EE projrammer with specific experance with investment banking systems gets $10,000+ a month.

-Oracle ERP or Siebel is also good.

What do you do in IT? Saying you are in IT means to me you are a code monkey or a help desk technician.

Do not take me the wrong way, but people just saying "in IT" means nothing. Specifying what you actually do beyond IT is a better way to go about it. People will know that you are in IT if you mention what you specifically do. Example:

I engineer networks, particularly using Cisco equipment.
I engineer SAN, with a specialty in HP XP series storage arrays.

hope that helps give you an idea.

TLDR version: IT means nothing to most everyone including people that work in the IT field.

How much is living cost in Shanghai ?

If it's a lot cheaper, I doubt you will get a better life here.

Code monkey is not really bad, as there are LOTS of code monkey, having peaceful life in Singapore

While, if you could specify your job description beyond code, you will be involving yourself in arguments with your co-workers and managers, and you could be hated, exiled, heck maybe they'll cut your salary ?

And probably you will earn bad reputation, because you don't follow a certain sets of established standards

Code Monkey ? you could get a P1 / P2 level of EP

Hi it is possible. Most of my peers around me are getting 6 figures in the IT industry. Depends on job scope and responsibilities as well as the company you are working for. ta =)
