scoliosis - where to go?

Post by danuse » Sun, 08 Mar 2009 11:25 am

My 13yr old son has scoliosis. I took him to a scoliosis centre in Mt. Elisabeth but they only did x-rays and confirmed the diagnosis that I had known for years. When I asked them to recommend some exercises, they only asked my son to come in six months for another check-up and x-rays. I paid a lot of money for nothing and I was very annoyed as I had an impression that even after the check-up and x- rays I knew better what to do to help my son improve his body posture than the doctor! I expected them to teach my son exercises that would improve his condition. He has been doing some exercises for a few years but he´s growing fast and the exercises may not be appropirate for him any more.
I might have gone to a wrong specialist. Could you please recommend where to go?

worth a call

My husband has scoliosis and he's gone to see Dr. Serene Ng - she's a chriopractor. She's worth a phone call to speak about your son, she would be honest to tell you if she can help and refer you to someone else if necessary.

Hi,

I had it when I was 14. When they discovered it, it went from bad to worse in less than 6 mths and I had to undergo surgery.

You didnt mention the degree of prob with your son..but contact me at [email protected] can try to tell you my experience in more detail.

My daughter has scoliosis and was so bad that she needed rods. We have had great (and not expensive) treatment at the specialist scoliosis clinic with Dr Gabriel Liu at HPB, SGH and NUH. PM me if you need advice. It can be very scary.

Watch out for people who say that yoga, spine tilt machines etc can help. Whilst they can help minor scoliosis, they are still only minimally of assistance in mild scoliosis and may help to ease any pain. Unfortunately, after a certain degree, gravity plays the main role. The longer true treatment is put off the less successful it will be. Do not play the lotto game with your child's back. Go to a MEDICAL specialist who is trained specifically in this area. It is too important to get wrong.

I went to Dr Kevin Lau. My son has been with him for a few months and we are able to see improvements on his curve. Hoping to see more in the next xray.
