Just been there during CNY. If I can suggest, pay a visit to the islands of Abdul Raman Marine Park, it's a group of 5 islands, among which I found the best for snorkelling being Sapi.
The islands are only 10-15 mins boat ride from KK main jetty, the trip is only around 55 RM (2 ways) including taxes and entrance fee.
Mamutik is also very enjoyable.
The main jetty is located at Jesselton point, 5-10 mins walking from the Hyatt hotel, and 15-20 mins walking from the Filipino market.
For the dinner, I feel to suggest the fish market just behind the filipino market, where you get giant BBQ prawns for 10-15 RM only.

Enjoy your trip there!

Hi gif,

How long did you stay in KK? And which airline did you take? Any suggestions to make the holiday as affordable as possible??

A really curious girl here. Thanks so much!

Hi all of you asking!

I was in search of a relaxing holiday and some nice snorkelling, that's why I chose to stay in KK, and my only trips were the daily boat rides to the islands.

I flew with Air Asia, the fare wasn't that cheap because of CNY, around 400 S$. My mother was with me, so I chose Hyatt Hotel, one of the best apparently, at around 180 S$.
There are however several hotels in KK, including backpackers' lodge, with very wide price ranges, just check on Asia rooms or similar websites.

The climb can be done in a very easy way, you have to overnight in the park and then wake up around 5 am to be on top before sunrise, I've been told it's great and it's only few hours walk. Otherwise you can start from sea level, then longer time is required.

Another valued trip is to the rainforest in the south of Sabah, but to my knowledge there is only 1 resort in the forest, so I'm not sure about prices.

For snorkelers, I think the most beautiful islands are in the south, the reference airport being Tawau, which is well connected to KK. The lodging on such islands might be quite expensive however, and if you have short time for your trip, it might become a bit time consuming, as first night will have to be in Semporna and not on the island.

Most of the tourists stay 2 night in KK, with a day trip to one of the isalnds, then the Mount Kinabalu climb and finally the orang utan visit in Sepilok, 4-5 days all together.
