Yes, this usually happens, the bird is chopped up in a few thousand harmless pieces... but we know now, not always. Why not just use a grill like a car has? There must be a reason...
To finish up...... if you put a grill over the engine with a mesh close enough to chop the bird into a few thousand pieces, it will not let through the thousands of litres of air needed to thrust out the rear.

Add to this the grill itself would likely get sucked into the engine even before looking at a bird there is so much "suck" generated from a jet at full throttle.

The car does much slower speeds than a jet but you'll know if you cover the grill at the front then your engine overheats..... we actually cover that grill in cold countries just to keep the engine hot enough to run sometimes.

Let's face it......if it were a good idea, it would have been done already  Hence my point about, in this case, a journo that just liked listening to the sound of her own voice and blabbering BS. However this is the downside of trying to make your news network "appealing" in a competitive environment, more looks than brains.
The mesh wouldn't be big enough to chop up a bird -- it would prevent a flock of birds from getting into the engine in the first place.

I think it's a perfectly respectable question, hair color notwithstanding. She's not an aeronautics specialist, she's just asking a question. No harm, no fowl.

hmmm - do you think if the mesh is fine enough that birds don't get through, then if a bird does hit the engine, it'll just be stuck to the mesh because the sucking force would be too strong for it 'bounce off' or whatever? So if a whole bunch of birds get stuck on the mesh, would that pose the risk of no air getting to the engine?

Just a rather gross thought. Imagine looking out your airplane window and seeing a few birds flattened up against the mesh covering the engines... lol. Gross.

Obviously there is a reason there is no grill in place, but I think wondering why is valid. A reporter in that situation is there to ask the questions a viewer might ask if they themselves had the opportunity. Perfectly valid.

We should always ask the question. And this I can't agree with:
Let's face it......if it were a good idea, it would have been done already
.

Bah! We'd be in caves if people thought that way. Washing hands in between surgeries, wearing a seat belt, allowing woman to vote, desegregation, polio vaccines, a helio-centric solar system -- all new ideas in their day.

And why can't you learn how to spell?? :D

Do you think Christiane Amanpour, with her British/Persian background picked up conversational Georgian along the way? No, so she had to learn how to pronounce a potentially awkward name. That is her job. When did our standards get so low that even news announcers aren't expected to understand the news they are presenting? Edward R. Murrow is pinwheeling in his grave for sure.
Ah, but as you know, typos are my trademark . . . but I can pronounce anything - try me. Go on, I dare you! Give me a difficult word and I will pronounce it here on this forum as proof! Hah!

I'm not saying that newsreaders should be efficient in their job, nor reporters nor current affairs people . . . but she learned Georgian, or how tp pronounce the Georgian names when in Georgia (Azerbaidjani names when in Azerbaidjan etc . . .) and that's her job . . . her focus. And she is excellent.

The aforementioned newsreaders, be they in Singapore, Malsysia, Australia, Germany, the US or anywhere really - have diferent names from different parts of the world to waddle through on a one-off basis every day.

A different kettle of fish . . . speaking of fish, I dislike the direction this thread is going. As a confirmed pesco-veg I don't think fowl should be grilled.

Engines are already designed to be strike resistant but you get a flock like this and even the safeguards built in are overwhelmed.

The fact engines are designed for strikes already means designers and engineers have looked at methods and solutions for a known problem. The issue is that we only can wait for future invensions and materials to solve this problem......next most like being a RamJet that has no moving parts at all inside.

It's not a news presenters jobs to cause problems by making comments they know nothing about. It's fine to put comments together and cases for/against particular cases but blindly making a passing remark live on air is quite irresponsible.

Having a grill won't make any difference because of the speed of aircraft the bird would smash through the grill. The stator vanes within the engines are designed to withstand the impact of birds to some degree. The problems come mainly with the mess that impedes the airflow and function of the engines due to the way they work.

Point taken Plavt, Earthfriendly and ScoobyDoes -- I only bring it up because with so many lives at stake, it begs the obvious question. I can't see how the newscaster was acting 'blond' for raising it, or that she was somehow negligent. I don't really care about the aerodynamics of jet engines, or why airports are built so close to shorelines and shorebirds. I just want to know everything is getting done to get me safely from point A to point B.

Back to the OP;

I saw the same show, it was awkward and a bit uncomfortable to watch. Not at all polished and seamless like the big Global news agencies like BBC, Al-Jazeera or CNN. I don't see un-scripted on the fly news here very often but when I do, it's often just that awkward. They'll get better at it though and I appreciate their doing what they can to bring local coverage up to speed.

CNA is a prochial, unprofitable local news masquerading as a respectable regional one.

It wants to be big, but is too cheap to do things properly. Sounds quite SIngaporean really.

What I remember most clearly about CNA were 2 things:

1) It was on once and I saw the story they were running: results of some local schools running competition in Sentosa.

2) In their newsbar once, while Jiang Zemin was still president of China, they ran something referring to Hu Jintao as 'future president of China', which was very presumptuous, certainly for a politcal environment like China's.

they've been around for the longest time, and it still looks the same to me.

You sound a right dickhead with your first comment, but that's probably the way you are . . . as for the running competition results . . . do you ever watch news wherever you were vomited up?

It amazes me how . . . actually it doesn't. I'm not even Singaporean but some of the things said here about Singapore are ever so childish and ill-thought out.

I dunno ..Andy21 comments kinda worked for me . Ok The "like singapore" may be considered a tad OTT but he's entitled to his opinion.

My favorite has to be a few years back when Saturday front page news was a kid winning the "name the budget terminal" prize > the winning name ==== wait for it ....Budget terminal
Cracked me up!!! :D

If thats your front page then you can't honestly expect to be taken seriously.
