about the predicament of hoping i can only say, dear sundaymorningstaple... i rather hope than fear.

Wonder what hope you would have had George Bush remained president considering he was their 8 years?

That's the problem with youngsters. If you don't study history you are doomed to repeat it. (let's hope not in this case but let's also be realistic) Camelot was a term used for JFK's time election and the 34 months before he was killed.

Who was talking about Bush staying in power? And no, McCain wasn't Bush. It was an astute election ploy by Obama to keep harping on it though as the whole of the US I think has had it with him (not necessarily the GOP - but Bush).

Anyway, let's wait till after the honeymoon.........

I noticed that the euphoria didn't do much for the stock market either this morning.

Shows you really are a bit naive I'd say. If you'd just watched the newsbroadcasts of his victory speech you would have noticed quite a number of males (almost all as a matter of fact) had wet eyes. I think it's time you grew up.

Joking? Nah, but you done a rather good job of making a joke of yourself though....

Yeah, I'd have to say it was a damn good speech as well. From both of them. Now let's see what he can do with it.

disagree,

first: forgetting historical milestones is not a youngster trait, its a groups trait by rule and individual trait by exception.

second: some people (me for example) feel that history is a subjective perception of particular (or general) social event.

history by definition cant repeat itself, thats an illusion...

events lead to differents outcomes...

a hitler will never (or lest say, most unprovable) ever be in power again in germany, but bush was in power in u.s.of.a... similar? yes, repeating a historical event? no...

just like the astute election ploy to say that obama is socialist, eh?

this i agree, but its sort of nice to comment on bit and pieces, no?

Plavt, I've managed to replace most of what I typed last night below before you erased it by mistake (I've done it occasionally as well).

Pompous? No. Realistic? Very much so. I was a young man in High School when Kennedy was assassinated and I was 3 months back from VN and stationed at Ft. Wolters Texas Flight School when I was sent to Mobile after MLK was shot. In this case It's not textbook history for me, I lived through it. My generation laid the basic foundations (if not the actual practise) that led to the ability for this current result to happen. It was a rough period of America's past and because my generation of dinosaurs hasn't yet died out (I'm at the leading edge of the BB Generation) we remember vividly what happened and large numbers of us actually were parts of those happenings (either for or against). I was 16 miles away from the 1st of the early Race Riots in the US back in 64 when H Rap Brown incited one in Cambridge Maryland.

Obama won 52% of the popular vote only. (That's the trouble with the electoral collage) There are lots of white-supremacists in the other 48%. They've already arrested 2. It doesn't mean the other 48% doesn't have it's fair share of nutters. You all think all 48% are nutters anyway because they didn't vote for Obama. :P

Let's face it, it's a historical election that is NOT going to sit well with the White-Supremacists lurking in the back-woods and "Trailer Parks" :P I only hope nothing like that happens because if it does, it's going to be worse than the "long hot summer" ever was......

How are they similar and by what convoluted and strange twisting of common definitions do you come up with something like that? :?

Normally your responses provoke thought. This time they just provoked a bellylaugh.

I am an emotional guy - What can I say.
I hear yah. I have some male friends who turn to the females in their lives to express their emotional side. As their male friends are not receptive to this aspect of their character. As a society, we expect men to be tough and less expressive of their emotional needs. And sometimes with undesirable and unhealthy results too.

And there's even this chinese saying the a man should only bleed but not drop a tear. It may have started with a good intention, to help toughen the man and help him deal with challenges of his life.

For me at the end of the day, just be a human. A happy one. And I agree with another forumer that said we all have a moral obligation to be happy. Why? Many wars, conflicts and problems in our society and our world are started by people who are unhappy or unfulfilled in their lives. Human tradtions and cultures (chinese, malay, indian and others) are created by us humans to make our lives easier. And if it ends up making my life harder, I'll toss it.

So if it makes one feel better to cry it out, then I question, why not? :)

And I do not believe that one-size-fits-all or one-culture-fits-all. Though I am a chinese singaporean, I do not practice everything that was taught to me. At the end of the day, I am a much happier and resonable person when I rely on my intellect and my heart. Would you say the blind pursuit of the 5C s is a good thing? Does that make Singaporeans happier , the country a better place to live in?

And for some, they need to live in more than one culture to be happy. They find it limiting to define themselves in terms of only one culture. They like the choice to be able to pick and choose from more than one pot. :) .

Now that the election is finally over, I decided to read up on the candidates who run for election :P . To my delight, I found dickepedia. May I invite all of you to a session of fun and laughter, at the expense of the public figures :( . Hilary, Obama and McCain can be found at:

That's their problem, there will always be somebody who isn't happy about something. The way I see it is simply America needed a change not prolonged policies by George Bush. The crux of the matter is there are as your post implies too many people who just do not like the idea of a black man for president (seems that includes you). Little wonder America is seen as a racist country amongst so many other things in other parts of the world. I hope Obama's election changes things.

Time to throw that tired old misconception out once and for all. White Supremacists, racists, etc... are everywhere. They hold important positions in top corporations, universities and governments. To think that they all play the banjo and have a mullet, now that is naive (and no, I didn't say you thought that, just that this part of your post sounded that way and it was a good segue to make the point).
