English-French translation

Post by blackginger » Sun, 12 Oct 2008 9:11 pm

Hello everyone, I'm helping a friend who is planning to do her 1st tattoo to confirm the French translation from english.

I am born free - Je suis ne libre or Je suis libre ne?

For I am born free- Pour moi suis libre ne. ( is this correct? And do they have the same meaning as the English version?)

Can someone confirm for me?
Thank you so much!!!!

Unless I'm much mistaken- "Je suis ne libre"
Your other example includes the word 'for' but is understood to mean 'because' or 'since' so I would suggest
Par-ce que je suis ne libre OR depuis que je suis ne libre

I'm no expert. To google your 2nd example with accurate results could be tricky. Cependant, il ya les gens ici qui peuvent parler ce langue facilement. Ou sont ils ????? Mm...un peu indolent je crois...

Why bother to get a tattoo with a phrase that you can't even understand?

Thanks. Guess we'll stick with Je suis ne libre.
Desole! je ne comprend pas! Je suis singaporean.

My friend had just broken up from a really bad relationship. To ink is to end that phase of her life and it will be in french as this is her favorite language. She does understand the language but just to double check as we are not Native French at all.

Thanks all.

Go to google search and type altavista translator...

OK ! Yeah this looks good HK203....I didn't think that would with so few words out of context but yeah the response below came up and the more I read it the better it looks......Pour moi suis libre né ....
I still think that for the purpose of a tattoo......it's a bit ambiguous.....gonna show the rooster whose French is better than mine.

OK - The rooster says we can't have 'suis' wihout 'je'.
And that the following is the best thing is to get rid of the word FOR and then you'll have (feminine gender): Nee en liberte. (Born free). Of course you'll need the accute sign above the first e in nee and above the last e in liberte. And if this hasn't confused us all well...mm....google 'Born Free'. That should come up 'cleanly' cpmpared to the other example.

If your friend is female, then it should be je suis nee rather than je suis ne. Don't forget the accent aigu on the first 'e' in nee.

Je suis née libre. (female)

Je suis né libre. (male)

Née en liberté, as Oz suggested, would be grammaticaly correct but in french, written this way, it sounds more like the kind of expressions we usually use to refer to animals, not humans, so i would advice not to use it unless your friend is an animal born in wild and now living in captivity  .

Née libre would be fine aswell.

(im french)
