who knows how WIFI works?

Post by thisonething » Fri, 05 Sep 2008 7:04 pm

i am currently doing a project, the proposed event is a carnival cum pasar malam, which will require people to pay by their ez-link card. this means that electronic detectors (the ones at MacDonalds/on buses) will need electricity.

i am thinking of using the wireless@sg to function the detectors. however, i don't know how it works! can anyone tell me more about it? e.g. if you're using wireless at home, sometimes the page loads: your server cannot be connected now, etc.. does anyone know what causes this problem?

any website/book/person,etc where i can get more information about? URGENT! my project is due next wednesday!!

Plan.
Spend the whole of Sunday reading up on WAN,LAN and wireless networks.
Monday >> decide which is best for you
Tuesday >>adapt it to suit your requirement.

TIP if you can do it without relying on a 3rd party service ( wireless @SG) then thats the way to go.
The access to your event is critical and unless you can get the provider to guarantee "quality of service" ( good luck with that) go with your own equipment ( hardware) that way it's much easier to manage.

If you set up a wifi lan make sure you use a non overlapping channel ( 1,6,13 if i remember rightly)

As for your "server problem @ home" problem could be lots of things
So learning the above will be of benifit to you. But your going to have to read up and do some work 8-)

Good luck

Durain ...i noticed your home work ( 6 out of 10 BTW) on the teachers desk while i was explaining how the dog had eaten mine !

aiyooooo... only 6 out of 10. so bad! got to be kiasu!!! got to!!! otherwise lose face.

ok, here's my rework homework... the wireless bit is easy but the payment via ez-link would be a bit difficult. so you are in a pasar malam and you got a power gen to power your equipment. because a pasar malam location is mobile, your only option would be using 3G broadband. no way you gonna get a T1 or T3 line there pronto, or even a leased-line or microwave (no, not the oven!). all these gonna cost you a bomb!

all you need to do is to plug a 3G broadband modem into an AP and you got broadband wireless at the pasar malam. you can pair 2 3G broadband modem to double the speed. now you need to control who can access the wireless. get a PC running a webserver and proxy and point it to your AP. so when a user get an IP from your AP, it will redirect the user to your proxy/webserver to a welcome page and ask for payment/username/password to continue to surf the net. once payment is done, the webserver/proxy will let the user in and be able to surf the net.

of course there are many ways to skin a cat. another way is to approach local business or users along the pasar malam route to share their broadband connection. you can get wireless router that will take 2 SSID and with bandwidth management, to control what traffic going to which SSID. what you are creating is like a wifi community, something similar to "the cloud".

anything to do with payment, it has to be secure. no way you gonna use wireless@sg for that. you gonna make nigerian 419er very happy.

as for your home wireless breaking, check the channels as bigfilsing mentioned. if your wireless router is using the same channels as someone DECT, it is possible to break it. you need to go into the router and monitor it. is it the wireless or the WAN. check your uptime and showtime on your router. did it break? or maybe someone is using your wireless for BT? because of how BT use the bandwidth, it will also break the WAN and reconnect again.

now go and burn the midnight oil and do your homework. show me what you have done i will give you a bonus which will help you immensely.

E payment and payment servers can be a real pain. Not only does it have to be secure all the transactions have to be logged and by law once the transaction is complete you have to dump all the personal data, yet keep sufficient records of the transaction itself. Theres a continual fight between the majpr credit card companies, banks and NETS E/NETS. It's a very tricky business.

As for your home problem. Google > basic home networking/wifi. Theres loads of info out there on how to set up and monitor a secure home network.
Join a forum of your brand of modem/router ...always a good place to start.

I am always amazed by how many open networks there are around . In my condo theres at least 3 open at any one time. If i was really mean i could be surffing porn and downloading BT on other peoples network no problem at all and as the subscriber they are responsible for the traffic on their line...remarkable

Good lcuk

Oh, and don't worry about bigfilsing & durain, they're just engaging in the little past time known as "my willie's bigger that your willie" or "I can pi$$ further that you can!" :P (They both know their stuff though!)

Actually, I was okay until about 2 lines into the 2nd paragraph and then they lost me as well. Yeah, gonna need electricity in any case though.

You got a lot of things messed up. First, must have electricity. No electricity, no nothing else.

WIFI is for communications, not supplying electricity.

Once you get electricity, then we could talk more, but suffice it to say you would not want to use wireless@sg because it is an open, unprotected network.

Actually, this seems pretty average for the typical assignment... wait until Friday night for a project due Wednesday. Homework should have been done way earlier.

My grade: F

A computer's wireless adapter translates data into a radio signal and transmits it using an antenna. A wireless router receives the signal and decodes it. The router sends the information to the Internet using a physical, wired Ethernet connection.
