I know they are no longer making any money. Most on bencoolen street have closed down or been converted to botique hotels. The old days are gone.

Just out of curiousity.

What gives you the inspiration to that thought of yours? Why not other asian countries?

Yeah, you need more than a million, so don't thanks a million.

Think about property cost and whether after taking into consideration the benchmark rate of a typical "backpayer's room" a day, You won't have the luxury to roll-in much profit here in Singapore.

Backpackers' hostels in Singapore are those whom had owns these properties years back, when property price is low, that's why they can still survive until now - you can ask the property experts here for their advise on this issue.

I would rather You to plan your hostel to be located in Johore Bahru whereby You will be able to provide:

1st - Resting point for Singaporeans during their weekend shopping spree.
2nd- Establish as a starting or ending point for backpayers to start their journey from the south to the northern part of Malaysia and Thailand.
3rd - You might be able to link yourself with some tourism-related business as a value-added service.
4th -It's easier to operate businesses there as money-makes-the-ghost-do-things(Mandarin translation).
5th- considering the operating cost.
