Bintan Immigration

Post by markhed » Tue, 15 Jan 2008 11:12 am

Hi Folks,

Just need some advice. Family and I are all booked into Bintan this weekend and we just realised our 4 year old sons passport expires in 5 months. Website says everyone must have 6 months validity on their passport.

Would they really turn him away because of this? It would be quite tough to arrange a new passport in time.

Cheers...

Money does talk, but I'll share a story. One of my students was joining another family for a long weekend to Bintan. This child was escorted by his mother to the ferry, but because he didn't have the full 6 months, the child went home with his mother, while the other family enjoyed their break in Bintan. Be prepared....

Can I ask if your student was Asian or Caucasian?

Ok, I emailed the embassy and they said I have to call by with the passport and a picture and pay $75 for a visa??? Whats that all about? Its only USD$ 10 at entry. Why do they need a picture??

$75 is the standard price for a tourist visa from the embassy. Normally people get this visa if they are not from a country on the VOA/visa free lists. And it should be 2 photos, not 1, which are used for record keeping/sending to Jakarta.

Look at their site for more info

Yes but my country is not one that needs a special visa. We qualify for visa on arrival with the only problem being we are short 4 weeks on one of the passports...

Which is a special circumstance necessitating the need of the tourist visa from the embassy. You can't get a VOA from the embassy as they are only issued at the points of entry, so they have offered you what they can, which is the $75 tourist visa.

For anyone who finds themselves in this situation again the easiest thing to do is go to your Embassy and apply for a new passport. They then give you a letter to say that you have done this and the Ambassador signs it and requests that you be permitted to travel. This is what we have done as the Indo Embassy couldnt process the visa in time.

What $20 bill? Do we have new currency I don't know about?

I too, know people who were turned away for being in the 6 month expiry window. Shouldn't the expiry date just be the expiry date?

Singapore has always had a $20 bill. It's just it's not that popular like a sawbuck is at home. The new $20 bill is a special edition using the new plastic and celebrating the parity between Singapore and Brunei and has scenes from both countries on it. I got a couple at home before they're all scarfed up by collectors.
