This is a strange one. But not strange. It's the call of the whole world....all of us over 35's I mean.
Nothing special about feeling this way in Singapore....it's the same the world over.
Blame it on the 'Youth Culture.'.....But DON'T BLAME IT.
Who have we to blame for feeling 'past' it but ourselves?
WHO SAID WE CAN'T ROLLERBLADE, AND CHAT UP WOMEN OR MEN OR PLAY PUNK, OR GARAGE OR WHATEVER ELSE THEY CALL IT NOWADAYS?
It's all in the mind.
SOD THEM I SAY.
Yes, there were 'Salad Days' in Sing in the 60's 70's etc.....but I look back on Sing in the 90's and think the same thing.....you see, it's all about perspective.
Yes, of course it would be wonderful to still have the body of my 16 yr old self, or that feeling that there was so much TIME to do anything I wanted. But I can remember feeling dissatisfied when I was 32 or so, and that was over 10 yrs ago, and how stupid is that.....here I am ten years hence, and what have I done about those feelings of dissatisfaction.......
Yeah, you got it..........not a lot...........just bumbled on, working, playing, sleeping....etc etc........
My point here is...............it is a new year................is this the year I REALLY do something ABOUT LIFE?
AND YOU KNOW......IT'S ONLY US WHO CAN DO IT. Nobody's going to come knocking on the door this morning and say, 'Hey Bubbs, look, here's a sparkly new life for you, filled with youthful hopes and dreams where you will be the star.'...........
So, as for meeting new people our age...or socializing............yes, it's more difficult as lots are in relationships....but....not impossible. Why restrict yourself to our age anyway....younger, older...whatever....and not only look in the normal places...bars, clubs etc....
When I was in Sing I used to go along to our local HDB community centre and sometimes join in the T'ai Chi or the Karaoke....yes, I know, sounds boring, but damn, I met some WONDERFUL people there.......(Which is why I'm very vocal about the threads on here which say locals and expats are arrogant etc.........load of old bullshit)........don't let the exceptions prove your rule is what I say..........
If you keep doing the same things you keep getting the same things.
Have you ever read that book 'Who moved my Cheese?;........it is a great book, really. The idea behind it can be taken on many levels....one level is such as this problem...............i.e....where are all the good times gone for folk who are, shall we say, 'more mature?'............
So, it's off my bum this year. And try, try not to fall into those so comfy habits and stretch myself more.....workwise, socially etc etc. No reaching for the telly remote after changing into slobby clothes after work........(well, not every day)...............and less of my ageist attitude....i.e.......'I can't or shouldn't do something cos I'm X years old'..................WHY THE HELL NOT........
That is a good motto for this year for me.....WHY THE HELL NOT........
After all, how lucky are we, compared to the thousands of others who were washed away on Boxing Day?
So, off you go..........PLAY YOUR PUNK..........START A NEW SIN AGE IN SINGAPORE IF YOU WANT........BE MAD, BAD, GOOD, WHATEVER.........
And now I'll shut up.......(Whew, thank God for that says everyone.)
