More seriously, find a few pictures of somebody who has the kind of hair you want, then take them to a hair salon and ask them to copy it. If it's a really good salon, they won't even laugh at you, except maybe in private after work.
And the problem with the "short and messy hair look" is that it actually takes two hours of sculpting in front of a mirror to make it look stylishly shot and messy as opposed to unwashed homeless shot and messy.
