who to approach for yoga

Post by vincent_exexpat » Fri, 06 Feb 2004 3:49 pm

 i 've had great yoga classes with this teacher-Thea who studied in India. She's really good. I practiced with her Ashtanga yoga for one and a half hour twice a week for the whole time I was in Singapore. I know she teaches a group of ten students every tuesday nite & weekend noons in central Singapore. I 'm not sure where.
But, I prefer 1-1 class and she charges very reasonable rates!!! only $70 per hour and she comes to your place. email her at [email protected]

Ever considered online yoga? Equipped with detailed instructions and interactive, animated pictures.

From the comfort of your own home.

Here are 3 examples:

Upright Bow Bridge Wheel

1. Lie on your back on the floor. Bend the knees and pull the heels towards the buttocks. Bring the feet into a slightly pigeon toed position. Place the feet so that they align with your hips.
2. Bend the elbows and place them behind the head. Palms are flat on the floor on either side of the head. Fingers pointing towards the shoulder blades. Gently press down through the palms and the feet and slowly push your shoulder blades back and lift the hips up off the floor and place the crown of the head on the floor.
3. Take 5 breaths here. Pull the navel in towards the spine, lift the pelvic floor muscles and inhale shift your weight from your palms to the front of your feet and push the torso up in one single movement.
4. The weight should be equally distributed on the hands and the feet. You can add the strap by placing it around the legs, just above the knees. This will help to build you into the full upward bow position.
5. Hold the posture for 5 to 10 deep breaths.

Plow

1. For beginners in this posture you will need a chair. Place the chair at the end of your yoga mat. Lie down on the floor with the chair about 2 feet or 60 centimeters away from the head. Begin by bending the knees and slowly rolling the spine into a ball supporting the lower back with the hands.
2. Keep the knees bend. Lock the elbows towards each other supporting the weight on the shoulders, not on the neck. If there is stress on the neck in this position, come out of the posture. Now slowly extend the legs placing the toes on top of the chair. Tuck the toes under, straighten the legs and extend the arms palms flat behind the body.
3. There should be no tension on the neck in this position. The weight is across the shoulders. If this feels okay and you feel you can go deeper in the pose, rest the tops of the feet onto the chair. If you are a beginner, hold this pose for 5 to 10 deep breaths.

Modified Pigeon

1. Begin by placing the left leg forward, the knee at a 90-degree angle and the right leg back as well at a 90-degree angle. Place the hands to the side of the body and find an erect posture. Shift the weight over to the right, inhale and lengthen the spine, exhale move the elbows down towards the floor shifting the weight to the right.
2. Only if the hip is extremely open, start to work the chest down towards the floor and extend the arms in front. Relax the head, neck, shoulders and arms and try to breath into the back body as well as into the hip.
3. Consciously release the hip while taking 5 to 15 slow deep breaths. Repeat on the other side.

If you have regular back pain you may want to try a Yoga class specifically for back pain, or try a good Pilates class, Pilates in most cases will help you to overcome your back pain better but will depend on the instructor.

If you are a beginner and have back pain DO NOT try the first two exercises suggested The Wheel and Plow are more advanced and could very likely make your back pain worse. With Ashtanga, is quite a dynamic class whch moves fairly rapidly, again if you are new to Yoga and have back pain, you should try something a little easier on the body where you can concentrate on technique and gently strengthening the body i.e. a beginners level Hatha Yoga class or Back Care class.

Miki, most Yoga studios allow you to buy a block of sessions which can be used for a variety of classes throughout the week, and the classes are usually valid for a few months. You can try www.oasisholistic.com if you like.

Thanks for the reminder. :D

Yes, the Wheel and Plow are rather advanced movements, so do not perform it if you're a beginner.

I posted the above 3 pics just for sample purposes.

No worries. Your posts are usually pretty spot on and good advice for health and fitness. Unlike some of the other rubish that crops up on here.

private yoga instruction

Post by sritantra » Sat, 30 Jul 2005 9:50 pm

There is a super yoga instructor in Singapore. American born and schooled in Thailand and India. He is also a university researcher. But yoga-wise he's frankly in a class all his own. Most of his work is private. He doesn't work much. He knows exactly what he's doing. http://www.apsara.clara.co.uk/troyoga/

DEEKSHA

Post by Kanesh » Mon, 21 Aug 2006 10:23 pm

DEEKSHA is the transfer of the divine conciousness into an individual. This transfer of the divine conciousness leads to great healing, cleansing and removal of blocks in the inner world which stand as obstacles in one's spritual and material progress. You might want to try Deeksha as a form of healing.
external world, a mere reflection of the inner world

I have been going to Absolute Yoga - River Valley Road and Telok Ayer, they do Hot Yoga (like Bikrams) for 90 mins which is a bit of a killer for the first few classes, but gets easier. Good facilities and good instructors. Would definately recommend.
