Buying laptop

Post by aphrodite » Sat, 09 Sep 2006 9:24 am

Hi,

any reccommendations for laptops?

I'm not really into IT so i'm not very certain about the variety of laptops out there.

I just need a simple one, no need any fantastic function or whatever.

However i would like a built in webcam though (a detachable one would be better or those built in ones?).

Also i will need it to have international warranty.

Any brands or models to reccommend and what are the prices like?

Thanks. :)

i'm quite interested in the sony vaio series cuz they're pretty, especially the rasberry red ones. But i wonder if sony notebooks are good compared to acer.

Was thinking of acer and dell too cuz i've heard good feebacks about them.

Thanks for the info. Might change my mind about getting the vaio.:)

sony vaio definitly have better external build quality compared to acer.. but they are way expensive . since most of the important components CPU/motherboard/ram/Hdd/LCD/DVDdrive
are only coming from a few speific vendors, i feel there is no point for paying more for the brand name and look n feel.

Thanks alot for the advice.

Think i'll consider acer's notebooks. And would you know if built in web cams are better than detachable ones? It'll be less of a hassle but in terms of the quality is it better? Thanks.

Built in or detachable doesn't really matter. The main issue with quality will be your internet bandwidth.

Acer and HP/Compaq are good. Avoid Dell.

Dell is value for money. My Inspiron 9300 is still humming well a year into service.

IBM used to be good - now Lenovo needs time to prove itself.

I heard Sony is good too - but the price tag...

Notebooks

Have you consider Fujitsu and MacBook/MacBook Pro notebooks? They are great machines. If I'm getting a new one, I'll go for one of them. Remember they are using different operating systems. I use both at work and home.

What are you planning to use the notebook for? Remember when you buy a computer you should also consider the additional cost of software, batteries, the add-ons that needs to be factored in.

Replacement batteries cost as batteries don't last after a year or so. I own a sony and have travelled with it quite abit and had to buy an additional battery to bring along.

If I know what your purpose is then I could advise you further.

Cheers.
