When the "Magic 8 Ball" was first designed in the late 1940's (1946) it was originally a novelty designed to use as a paperweight. As a paperweight usually sits on your desk it means you are sitting behind the 8 ball. Old saying for pool player "being behind the 8-ball" Also, the last ball to shoot when playing 8-ball pool.

The 20 standard answers on a Magic 8-Ball are:

* Signs point to yes.
* Yes.
* Reply hazy, try again.
* Without a doubt.
* My sources say no.
* As I see it, yes.
* You may rely on it.
* Concentrate and ask again.
* Outlook not so good.
* It is decidedly so.
* Better not tell you now.
* Very doubtful.
* Yes - definitely.
* It is certain.
* Cannot predict now.
* Most likely.
* Ask again later.
* My reply is no.
* Outlook good.

There he goes again........veritable fountain of knowledge 8-)

Mine must be a duff one because it says things like:

* yes, your alcohol limit is too low
* drink more, you know it makes sense
* time for a pint?
* lager is your friend
* alcohol makes you dance like a sexy beast
* alcohol enhances your karaoke skills
* hangovers are good
* the pub is your church
* it's your shout
* time for a kebab
* time to call a cab
* stock up on Panadol

Am I shaking it wrongly or something????????

GC, I'm only fair at trivial pursuit due to the entertainment industry which I am sadly ignorant about for the most part - same with music. I hear songs I like - could care less who sings or wrote them and it may be the only song by them I ever liked.

I am good at Google however. :mrgreen:

I knew it was around in the early 60's when I was in Jr High but I was also surprised that it was invented in '46.
