You might want to take a look here:
http://www.dpreview.com/
Wouldn't buy anything without first reading a review on that site.

Mrs S bought a Fuji Z1 and is very happy with it, very easy to use, takes great images, very compact, even the video function is good quality.
If you want a good quality, good value compact point and take camera, I'd recommend this one

An unknown manufacturer with no support. 4x digital zoom? 10Mp interpolated? That mean horrible picture quality.

10Megapixel at $139? It must be an one-time use camera only! I will never buy such a camera.

I'm using a Canon, good image quality but quite hard to use for the beginner. If you only look for normal function and easy-to-use, try Olympus or Nikon (not the models for professional).

Recently purchased the Canon Coolpix 6MP - very happy with it's performance - and fits in any pocket.

They're good, but the canons are better

Bought a Casio Ex-600, 6Mb, with anti-shake and 32 pre-selected shots. It also comes with rapid flash shoot allowing you fast repeat flash shoot.
Fast recharge and saving also mean u can quickly snap multiple photos. Loved it!!!!

Besides the brands as such, also look at the lenses used.
Canon uses it's own renowned lenses, Fuji does the same (it's own). Sony is using Carl Zeiss, renowned lenses.
Another one to consider may be Pentax, the optio series. Small, good quality and sharp prices. I had the optio55, wonderful camera til I lost it...
Pentax has great lenses as well.
And don't be fooled with zoom: digital zoom is useless, check the optical zoom.
Agree that the brands mentioned are worth considering.
