Englishman, Irishman & a Scotsman....

Post by Baron Greenback » Mon, 03 Apr 2006 3:35 pm

In the UK the Irish are the receiving end of many jokes, they are depicted as being less than intelligent in the joke world, somewhat like blond women.

I found out that in Ireland the same jokes are told about people from Cork.

I have heard the same jokes about Poles as well - but can't remember which nationality tells them.

So who do the Singaporeans tell jokes about? Or are there so many cultures together that it doesn't happen?

Who do different nationalities tell jokes about? Do American's take the p1ss out of Canadians? Does everyone poke fun at the French?

caveat: this is not meant as a big debate about stupid nationalities, I was born in Ireland & have happily seen the funny side of Irish jokes all my life, just curious who is the butt of jokes around the world. :)

Baron,
I am not entirely sure but it seems it is only us Britons who like to joke about other races. Americans do not joke about Canadians (to the best of my knowledge). An article I read sometime ago stated what I believe to be true: 'Americans genuinely like Canadians but feelings are not mutual'. I really do not recall any other races making jokes about us save the odd moment when there has been some conflict of interest (e.g. cartoons in a Spanish newspaper referring to the rock of Gibraltar).

Plavt.

Baron this is a Singaporean joke that was told to me.

Q:In football, when an Indian gets a corner what does he do?

A: He sets up a shop.

It borders on discrimination but amjust sharing here, lest some overzealous mod might be lurking, since Baron was wandering about Singaporean themed jokes.

I don't really find it funny but some of my local friends were laughing their butts off.

Then again it maybe the beer.

This joke was told me by an INDIAN friend just FYI.

All of Europe makes fun of the french...

The germans make fun of the Ostfriesen.

It's just natural behaviour to make fun of your neighbour... Or of minorities in your country.

You can hear jokes about Belgium, German or Swiss in France. Belgians love to tell jokes about Dutch... Austrians about Turkish... Etc...

Baron, the jokes about Poles (you mean from Poland?) are famous in US. And in Russia too.

And Bremen, I agree the rest of Europe makes jokes about the French. Must be the best way they find to deal with our superiority... :P :D

As we would make jokes about the Irish, therefore the Irish would be the "Butt" of English jokes.
