Airbus A380 - Evacuation Drill

Post by CardZeus » Mon, 27 Mar 2006 10:53 am

One man broke his leg and another 32 people suffered minor injuries during an emergency evacuation drill of the new A380 superjumbo in Germany.

Airbus said the exercise was a "great success"

I would never fly in one. Have a friend who is an engineer who said the safety concerns have been whitewashed - but of course for an airline that never loses lawsuits in, this should not be a problem...

'Springs' might be what they're lacking.

It was just a typo-istical mistake

But I seriously think they cut back on the costs so much that a few missing springs seemed trivial....

or so they would like to believe.

What do springs have to do with it? Nothing.

Clearing close to 900 people out of a plane in under 80 seconds, with "just" a single broken leg and some friction burns from the slides, with only 8 of the available 16 doors open, is actually quite impressive.

Double the 80 seconds in times of emergency and panicky passengers, they'd still have high chances of survival, won't they?

Or, a broken limb or two is worse than the possibility of death?

Yes agreed... but in a real emergency situation I think there'd be several deaths from trampling and many more serious injuries. But that's only if the plane hadn't just crashed into the ground at 600 mph...

When the 747 came into service I was at High School and well remember at one morning asseembly a teacher discussing air-crashes. He stated: "imagine an accident involving a jumbo-jet (there hadn't been one at the time), it is bound to come". Such a statement can be attributed to the A380 and any other aircraft given the complexity of future concerns in terms of increased traffic and likely human blunders.

The participants of this 'drill', were they from the company?

If so, there's no excuse for having someone break his leg. Afterall, they must have been briefed on the procedures.

Granted they must have been told to complete the exercise within a certain timeframe but still.

In real situation however, I agree the toll would definitely be higher and that's just the ones who made it through the ordeal.
