On EP and the letter G - thought it was because my surname starts with a G. Mrs Vaucluse is on a dependants pass and it starts with F, so there went my theory.

me and the kids are G - we're dependants passes. Other half is F I think, he's EP.
I always thought that was the difference.

So the criteria to give F or G letter is... random!

Can't believe I was correct . . . This calls for a celebration and a change in guise - the last post from Vaucluse.

Singapore citizens and permanent residents born before the year 2000 are assigned the letter "S".
Singapore citizens and permanent residents born in and after 2000 are assigned the letter "T".
Foreigners holding long-term passes issued before 2000 are assigned the letter "F".
Foreigners holding long-term passes issued in and after 2000 are assigned the letter "G".
Before 2000, it was commonly thought that "S" stood for Singapore" and "F" for Foreign. In 2000, the "T" and "G" ranges (which are one letter after "S" and "F" respectively) were introduced to avoid conflicts with previously issued numbers. As "S" is the 19th letter of the alphabet, it was reinterpreted as denoting that the person was born in the Second millennium (0000–1999), "T" is the 20th letter of the alphabet, denoting that the person was born in the years 2000 to 2999 (the Third millennium).

You are a wee bit late with this news. It's very old news, in fact. I posted this information way back in Feb of 2013.

Phucker clipped it from a wiki link. My authorship is underlined.

I think both hypothesis may be correct but I more lean towards the old one: S-Singaporeans/F-Foreigners and later, when they realized the 7 digit code is not that capable for a 6-digit population they decided to make a change at the millennium mark naturally taking the next in line characters.
