I know they are a shoe with a tassell at the front but why are they called penny loafers?

Penny loafers don't have a tassle. That is a tassle top loader Penny loafers have a slot you can really put a penny for good luck.

Yeepie, SE is correct but you don't have to put a penny in them if you don't own one. You can just loaf about in them instead!!! If you do have a penny it is always best to 'spend it'!!!
