Can I live in a hotel for 6 months and use that as an address for the EP?

You will need to update MOM asap when you found a permanent address.

I’ve seen people stay in hotels for a few months, but for an EP address the place usually needs to give you some form of documented tenancy, so best confirm with MOM first.

I was on EP for 3 or 4 years before getting PR and I never once had to provide any form of "documented tenancy". I mean, why? You gotta live somewhere.

During COVID things tightened up significantly. They don’t ask for documented tenancy, but they are tracking addresses a lot more carefully nowadays.

Either my employer or MOM messed up my address when I moved — only 2 numbers changed, the second digit of the block and the second digit of the floor… they got the block right, but not the floor. This was likely incorrect for many, many years and multiple EPs, but during COVID I finally got a nastygram sent to my employer email from the official in charge demanding my true address with some threatening language, emphasizing the offense and penalties. I explained that it must have been a data entry error by my employer and proceeded to give my current address as well as my former address which had the two digit difference. This should have made it clear why the mistake could have occurred. I proceeded to update this myself with MOM and confirmed back to them the same. I checked a few months later and it was switched back to the wrong address again (LOL) so I re-updated and asked my employer to make sure they stop updating it or at least get my address correct if they do. I never heard anything else about it after that.

Yeah there's definitely been a change. As a private property owner I get updates if someone tries to use my address also for MOM and there's a service you can use to check who is registered at your address. I have had an unknown person try to use my address and it was easy to inform MOM that was not the case. A young Indian woman rents a room from me and had no issues registering at my address with basic paperwork (a contract, unstamped).
