Yes very sad, sacrificed her own life to save another.

The currents at Bulan Channel off Sentosa is too strong for Kayakers. Hope more safety measures can be done after this incident.

Feel like there should be more caution exercised when conditions are not perfect for outdoor activities.

In this case it wasn't the conditions but the confluence of different currents in that area that cause the turbulence. Similar to an undertow often found in spots on ocean facing beaches especially where there is good surfing, etc. If you don't know how to get out of an undertow then you shouldn't be in that type of an area. That is why the blue barrier was out there but the currents don't always obey the barriers.

Her lifejacket was found so she was probably wearing one but without the crotch strap, which is almost as bad as not wearing one.

Those blue barrels have always been a hazard to kayakers. If strong wind or current pushes you against them you have nothing to hold onto and can't avoid getting sucked under and capsized.

Expect a mindless heavy-handed response from the authorities such as an outright ban on unpowered watercraft.

Let's see if there is any knee-jerk reaction from the authorities.

Anyway the Bulan Channel is not suitable for such non-powered watercraft. Can you clearly see the washing machine kind of swirl from afar.

Even scarier. The ocean is such a mighty beast.

Are life jackets not still effective without crotch straps? I've done watersports countless times and can count on one hand the number of times it's come with a crotch strap.

In turbulent water it isn't really effective as your arms & legs are flailing around trying to get sort but you might be turning around over or upside down. Additionally we don't know it the lifejacket was even fastened or not but even if it is, it is bouyant and the downward current could easily pull you out of the jacket without the crotch straps in place and your arms above your head or shoulders trying to swim upwards. Safety always must come first regardless of the temporary discomfort. I'm alive after 50 years of diving and 20 of them deep sea commercial diving. Been in a lot of uncomfortable positions at times but safety has always pulled me through.

Welcome back sms!

Have not seen you around for a while. How are you?

I feel the Kayakers shouldn't venture so far out at Bulan Channel and even so safety protocols should be improved and respected.
