Yes, it’s best to take a cab home or have a designated driver on nights out, not just to avoid getting a fine or jail time but also to be responsible.

One thing that helps is the bars close now at 1030 - the buses are still running. I wonder if the booze patrols are out earlier than 9pm now?

Speaking of which, how many major DUI's has Tiger Woods been in now without a single charge? 3? All clearly under the influence of something. Talk about double standards. So fortunate he hasn't killed anyone yet.

Is it true that even if you merely sit in your car, parked in a designated car park lot along the road, and resting, you could still be considered to be driving for the purpose of DUI?
Yes, you're still in charge of the vehicle.

You cannot be in the car at all.

The locals basically try to abandon their cars if they see a road block coming up (and they are drunk) or if they are in an accident and intoxicated and not on camera (harder now). The cops have to identify you as being in car.

The standards are different when you’re rich and famous.

Exactly the same thing happens all the time in the UK- driver will abandon the car, then call it in as stolen the when they are sober in the morning. “Obviously it was stolen at some time last night officer, whilst I was out with friends”.

Take note the penalties have jumped.

A colleague is currently in the 48 hr holding cell (we assume) awaiting court for his 2nd DUI.

Min 5k fine, 5 year driving ban and prison sentence likely.

If you get done for DUI you will be incommunicado for 48 hrs max. The only way we found out was having the car lease company trace the car to the police compound in Defu.

At 5k, he'll feel like he got away with it.

At 2nd DUI, prison should be mandatory, followed by expulsion from the country if he's an expat.

Edited to add a few more waves.

Yes the consensus is a forced vacation at Changi. He was released very early this morning so was in detention 24 + hrs.

The police did respond to his wife's missing person report to advise her that he was under arrest and the IO apparently confirmed to her when he was released.

He hit something so two charges. DUI and destruction of govt property. The latter can be quite serious. They traced him down with a TP camera so they may add failing to stop or report.

Yeah, some people never learn. I met up with my best friend in the states this past November and while he has slowed his roll considerably with age, he still drives with an open container or even fully inebriated — “booze cruisin” as it is commonly called. Not to justify it in any way, but where he lives there is hardly anyone else out on the roads (deep in the countryside) so statistically less risky, but I also know he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he caused an injury, especially a death. Despite the lower odds - it’s never worth the risk.
