Jurong is located in western Singapore and is broadly divided into Jurong East and Jurong West. It is one of the largest planning areas in the country and plays a major role in Singapore’s economic, residential, and recreational landscape.

Jurong East serves as a major commercial and transport hub, while Jurong West is primarily residential, known for its community atmosphere, schools, parks, and local eateries. Together, they form a well‑balanced district that supports both work and leisure.

With excellent MRT connectivity and expressway access, Jurong is easily reachable from Orchard Road, the Central Business District (CBD), Changi Airport, and other parts of Singapore.

I worked in Jurong for over 28 years. I never lived there because it would feel too close to the office. Singaporeans have told me that the east side of Singapore has cleaner air, and true enough — there can be some unpleasant odors — from our office in Jurong we would often smell the cocoa factory or the plastic being burned (hopefully no dioxins were released) in the incinerator, depending on which way the wind was blowing.

That said, I really like Jurong. Boon Lay Market in particular is a favorite lunch destination… you can find the same hawker stalls and owners that have been there for decades. I got to see two major expansions of Jurong Point, which was about 1/4 its current size back in the mid-90’s. The place is very “down to earth” — all walks of life, which is a nice change from the sanitized parts of the island.
