Based on your criteria, I’d definitely recommend Taiwan or Japan, for the food, and climate. As a tourist, you won’t have a car when you’re overseas so some walking is to be expected.Fortunately, both Taiwan and Japan have incredibly advanced public transport so you will definitely be able to get around more easily than if you were elsewhere, such as Thailand.

Japan and Korea are very beautiful places with good people and good food. The weather is nice all year round (even their summers are not quite as hot as in some Asian countries). However, I've been to both places and they require a lot of walking and using subways, which can get pretty crowded during rush hour. Taxis are quite expensive.

I know this thread is more than a little dated, but I’m in a similar situation right now so I figured I’d ask anyway. I’m planning a year-end trip with my parents as well, and they’re very much in the “easy sightseeing, good food, no trekking around” category.

Japan keeps coming up as an option, especially cities like Kyoto or Fukuoka — warmer than Tokyo that time of year, and easy to get around without too much walking. The only thing I’m unsure about is whether it’s better to stay in a big hotel in one spot and do day trips, or split the stay into smaller hotels in different areas. For older travellers, does the constant moving around get tiring?

If anyone here has taken their parents to Japan or a similar easy-paced Asian destination, I’d love to hear what worked best for you.

It really depends on the parents and their interests… for my parents, the first place I sent them when they visited Singapore was Bali. It has a wide variety of things to see and do, and I didn’t even go with them… everything there is geared for tourism so it was super easy.

For my parents in-law, I’ve taken them to Korea & Japan. In Korea it was winter so I put them up in Seoul Times Square (hotel is attached to the mall, and it’s connected to the train by a pedestrian tunnel - so it was easy, despite the snow).
