Cargo/passenger boat service between Singapore & Hong Kong in 1980

Post by MichaelGabout » Thu, 01 Apr 2021 11:17 pm

Hi there,

I read that there was once a cargo/passenger boat service between Singapore and Hong Kong and I'd like to know if you could tell me more about it, especially for the year 1980.

Could you for instance tell me or direct me to a site where I could find the timetables of such a service, the name(s) of the ship(s), the cost, the duration and so on?

Once again, I'd be very glad to hear from you,

Lovely Easter to you all,

Michael

There certainly would have been cargo ships, and some of them might have have taken a small number of passengers. Some shipping lines/routes still offer such today, though IIRC I've only ever met one person who made such a journey. See for example: https://www.cargoshipvoyages.com/WhatToExpect/

Re: passenger boat. Luxury cruise ship I expect, I'm not sure there would have been a market as late as 1980 for a 1600 mile ferry journey... ?

See if you can borrow for pick-up a copy of a Lonely Planet 'South East Asia on a shoestring' from back then. They were publishing revised editions every couple of years. Here is the 1978 edition: https://www.amazon.co.uk/South-East-Asi ... 0959808078
There was another in 1982... A copy of that book from around then will give you a definitive answer on the SIN<>HKG travel options back then.

Howdy fellas, nice to see you abouts. Yep still here too, head down battling on. Not as immortal as SMS's Methuselah (969 years), unless the reference is to the 6L bottle of wine rather than the biblical figure.

Either one will work! We age well. I might be getting a wee bit more vinegarish than the wine though!
