Separation/Divorce? Student Pass or Dependent Pass

Post by whoami1 » Tue, 12 Sep 2023 4:22 pm

Is there a difference between a student pass or a dependent pass for school? My ex-wife does not have residency in Singapore and my son is on a dependent pass. However, she wants me to sign my son over into a student pass so that she can use him to get her LTVP just to stay in Singapore.

Are there any concerns regarding this? Is there a difference between the student pass and the dependent pass?

What about in regards to who is attached or holds legal custody?

thanks,

Both passes allow a child/student to reside in Singapore and attend a school. A LTVP via a Student Pass is usually for either a) kids that come here to study or b) family was located here but the father was sent off to go run/fix something else and the mother/kids stayed behind.

In your case, some may wonder why the child needs someone else to come here to look after him (could be OK) or why he needs to change from a Dependent Pass to a Student Pass (no real reason if you are still employed). Further, if the mother is not living with the child, you may have more questions to answer.

I understand why a mother would like to be near the child. However, if she’s just looking for a way to get into Singapore, you may want to consider the above (along with what she’ll be doing here). Even so, it may still be fine.

As for custody rights or control of the child, I don’t think that will be governed by the LTVP but I don’t know for sure.

Be very careful. She could also be using the child for other reasons, e.g., a Damocles' Sword as it were, and there is a very good possibility of your neck being in the arc of the sharp edge of the swing. Just sayin', not inferring anything (words just from a person who been around the block several times already.

NYY1, oddly enough I Just answered the other post (I don't need to change anything though) before I saw this one. (My habit is reading the unread posts from the bottom up which is why I miss the occasional new thread by the old OP.)

Singapore is a haven to run away wives with children who are trying to usurp whatever child custody arrangement exists in their home country. I do not know why or how but I've come across this a few times. It's odd as Singapore is a hague convention country as well.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

Better be careful, you're skating on very thin ice it appears.

Regardless, mothers are usually awarded custody of their children in a court of law.

LOL! Kind of scary actually, I wouldn't want to keep my ex around, that I know for sure.
