Cost of Furnishing an Apartment

Post by makale » Thu, 22 Jul 2010 1:48 pm

Hey out there in advice land! Looking at getting a 2 bed apt. Would $5K be enough to furnish it to a reasonable standard??

Define reasonable standard. It is pretty obvious that this very much depends on your life style. Go to ikea.com.sg and check out your semi-budget options.

Are you looking to outfit it in early orange crate and cable spool or Louis XIV? The range is about that wide.

Let's try to put some perspectives to your question.

This is what I think, is required at a minimum for a 2-bedroom partial furnished place:
- 1 Queen/King Size Bed for master bedroom
- 1 Single/Super Single Size Bed for the spare bedroom
- 1 Dining table (can be small for 4 people?) plus 4 chairs
- 1 Sofa for the living room (and maybe a coffee table to go with it?)
- 1 wardrobe (if there is no built-in wardrobe in the apartment)
- Basic cutleries (i.e. plates, spoon, forks, knife, glasses)

Other things needed if the place is totally empty:
- Washing machine (& Dryer?)
- Fridge
- Cooking Stove (if not available)

Other nice to have...
- Shoe rack
- Book shelf
- TV
- TV Console
- Side table (next to the bed with a lamp?)
- Mirror
- Lamp
- Radio
- Iron and Ironing Board
- Coffee Maker
- Microwave

Hopefully this list is something you can work on, for a start! You can start striking off those items that are already in the apartment, and fix a budget for the items that you need to buy yourself.

We were able to do our entire 3 bedroom apartment from IKEA for about that. Have fun, get the Ikea card, and don't forget to try the Swedish meatballs.

Not a good idea!

I did that, as it has cost me a fortune over the years. Every time I go to IKEA for swedish meatballs, I end up spend too much money in the rest of the store. Damned expensive meatballs in the long run!

here's a solution to the meatball problem: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alto ... index.html

in any case, some people find IKEA cheap...if you have money to burn. OP could do with IKEA for 5k. And don't forget the electric fans. And also this.
