Do new citizens have to serve NS?

A couple of years ago, I was told by an ICA officer that a male PR (under the FTS scheme) under the age of 40 *might* be asked by MINDEF to serve NS, if the country needs it. It therefore stands to reason that a new citizen under the age of 40 might also be asked to do so if it's needed. However, the thing is that, there are no known cases of this actually happening. The ICA officer did mention that too.

I believe that, it's the same reason why able-bodied men have to continue coming down for reservist.

Speaking of which, does anyone have any experience with that? What does that even entail?

Do you mean reservist? Yes, my spouse did it. He was in combat engineers and did engineer things. He had fun, frankly.

Sounds cool, they probably enjoy the reunion with their old platoon mates.

Oh, I understand. Waivers are reversible, whereas an exemption is not. That makes sense. Though, how useful would those with waivers be in the event of a national emergency? Considering they would have had no experience in armed combat/serving in any vocations.

Valid question Lisa, but I'm guessing in a worst case scenario, they would be posted into positions as closely resembling their civilian occupation as possible, e.g., clerical, administration, or if a F&B worker, mess hall or if working in a supply chain industry, Supply or if mechanically inclined, into workshops for mechanized equipment. Meanwhile all those who were filling those positions except for those who have exceptions to infantry due to Physical disabilities (like my son who had broken an elbow body surfing in a mosh pit with his band before NS therefore his range of motion was detrimental to handling firearms - he still served and they switched him from Army to Navy and trained him to operate a forklift in the supply warehouse). They are given Physical Ratings depending on the severity of the disability therefore finding a place for almost anybody breathing.

Ah, the PES system? I've heard of it. Apparently it's a huge source of pride for 18 y/o boys, they train hard to make it to PES A.

And that does seem like the best way to make use of everyone's skills - after all, armies are more than just those fighting on the ground.

Touch wood we never have a worst case scenario. But if we did I think it would look a lot like the beginning of covid when we didn't know yet what we were up against. People were deployed and redeployed wherever needed including volunteer groups. Most people tried to do whatever we could within our capacity, like for my business we went remote so we could extend operating hours. We're in the mental health line and saw a 120% increase in business. Good to know SG can handle a crisis, but would rather not do that again anytime soon.

So is it considered a waiver or an exemption even if the word “exempted” is used in the letter?

Read it as "Currently exempted". It could (but is not likely) to change.

Re-read the letter again and realised I overlooked another sentence at the bottom of the page.

This exemption shall take immediate effect and shall apply unless subsequently revoked by the proper authority as and when deemed fit.
