Topic: do expats typically have live-in maids?

It will all depend on the type of place you live in. Most condos/houses here have a maids room, although some are particularly tiny and you may not want to use it as such, but others are lovely. It is much easier here to get a live in maid than to have one full time that lives out (foreign domestic ...

Well you found the only short cut into the market, that train line and the schools are the things that causes all the problems and no through roads. We tried walking the various routes and have never found a better way to get from Coronation Rd W to Ghim Moh, Durain's advice from HV is excellent to ...

They get through spaces that look like nothing would get through, so keep your windows open and enjoy the air. A few little geckos will do you no harm, nor your children, but they will eat the mozzies and I know which I would rather have around.

Just to add to R.N.T and Matney, and SMS. I went through that scenario as the child in the situation, and also as the wife again later on. It was hard as a child, when my dad came home on holidays it was like a stranger amongst us, he didn't like the food we ate as he was used to different things, h...

Teneriffe has lots of stairs inside, and they are open stairs (just slats with no backplates etc and no sides of any substance) not ideal for young children. It was one of the reasons we didn't like the place. The units were very nice but a bit too close to the neighbours (your kitchen windows to th...

What's wrong with HK? Even in places like Mongkok etc. I found it a lot easier to walk there than here, at least it is a pace faster.

I cringe too, and there has just been a campaign about it, not big enough mind you, but you will see posters and a bus or two ads on it about doing just that. It is not just locals, believe me, there are a lot of people, who do not look like locals, who I see with unrestrained children in their cars...

Agree with SE, I thought that this was exactly what the new insurance laws were all about. You can't do this any more.

Lots of people dress up here for things like the opera, theatre and the like. Thing is, lots of others don't, it is a very mixed crowd.

Go on, dress up if you enjoy doing it. You won't be out of place.

Are you going to see Turandot? Enjoy, it looks fab.

We only use aircons to cool down our rooms after the afternoon sun has been on them and to get them ready for sleeping*. We do have ceiling fans in all rooms and use those at night and during the day if we are in the rooms. We aren't high up and blocked by other buildings so not a lot of a breeze fo...
