Re: Can we afford to relocate?

That's about SGD15k a month at today's exchange rates...well over three times what the average household makes here. I've seen this point made before and it almost offends me [no offence CG lol, and I've no idea where you're from]. If you're a 'Westerner' and get expatted it's invariably a brief, p...

That's about SGD15k a month at today's exchange rates...well over three times what the average household makes here. Plenty of other posts here on COL. Condo could range from around 4k and up for somewhere decent. Depends on where you want to live - how about filling out the "where should I live" qu...

Re: TAX/IRAS - I WANT TO PAY EARLY(NOW)

Yeah my experience has always been good at the IRAS office too. Fast and efficient. You can make a payment any time - just write the check and hand it in at IRAS. You can probably guess your tax burden from last year and/or the IRAS calculator. Then when you do get your Notice of Assessment in late ...

Re: [UK tax]: Get expatted => home liable to CGT

Not really - you had to pay CGT before just by being resident in the UK. Now you have to pay CGT whether you are resident or not. You don't become liable because you are sent abroad...you were already liable! Basically, it means non-residents now have to pay the same tax as residents who benefit fr...

Re: [UK tax]: Get expatted => home liable to CGT

Bitch if I have to pay CGT on my home, just cos I got sent abroad for a while. p.s. Where does it lead? Before I will be expatted, in my 'full package' I demand a property valuation on my home.... ? Not really - you had to pay CGT before just by being resident in the UK. Now you have to pay CGT whe...

Re: [UK tax]: Get expatted => home liable to CGT

This has been on the cards for a while now - closes the loophole that allowed people to be non-resident and still not liable to CGT as residents are. Hopefully will cool the UK property market a little as investments are less attractive.

Re: Why doesn't Singapore remember World War II?

You may also recall that the British had guns pointing seaward, at Labrador Park, to repel the expected Japanese invasion from the south. Only, they came from the north and the British high command refused to turn the guns northward, living Singapore a sitting duck for the invading forces. Not much...

Why are white people expats, the rest are immigrants?

Interesting article in the Guardian last month about the discrepancy in terminology used for different groups of people. http://www.theguardian.com/global-development-professionals-network/2015/mar/13/white-people-expats-immigrants-migration I think this is perhaps one area that Singapore has hit th...

Re: Confusion over license conversion & worried I can't start new job!

One more thing to add regarding your Basic Theory Test - STUDY. Seriously, you might think your home country is similar, you might think you know the rules of the road - but this is Singapore and the test is designed to catch you out. i.e. "How many emergency exits are there in the KPE tunnel?" i.e....

Re: Non-residents to pay more for public sports facilities

I know, there are many walks of life where already there is differential pricing: blah blah blah 7) Safra sports facilities So already most govt facilities there is differential pricing. This strikes me as odd. I would have thought that anyone who served in the Singapore Armed Forces would enjoy th...

Re: Online storage for photos/videos

This need of having some TBs allocated in some cloud to be accessible from anything and anywhere... I have problem to imagine why one may want to use it at any practical frequency, or is this just for a backup? Of course backup alone is a reason, though I do have a raid-array NAS at home for ultra-...
