Re: UK vote to leave the EU ['BREXIT'] - 23rd June

... MJ: ‘I think UK should stay in for purely selfish reasons, the ability to work throughout Europe without having to apply for work permits is a lovely option to have and I'd really rather that stayed the same. ... and by extension one could say that it’s the selfish/self-interest of the French a...

Re: UK vote to leave the EU ['BREXIT'] - 23rd June

JR8 also has his cause and effect round the wrong way. The UK announced a phase out of incandescent bulbs to be completed by 2011 in 2007 http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7016020.stm a full year before the EU member states agreed to the same http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-08-1909_en.htm?l...

Re: Woodlands to JB?

The checkpoint to the nearest MRT (probably 50/50 as to whether that is Woodlands or Marsiling) is a fair distance but you can catch buses directly from checkpoint after you've cleared immigration and customs. The route numbers are 160, 170, 950 and 170X, bus 950 stops at both Marsiling and Woodland...

Re: Random thoughts thread

I'd love to take credit but I think I picked that up off QI (BBC panel show) where I learn a lot of irrelevant but interesting facts.

Re: Random thoughts thread

Ok, cue music from the 'Twilight zone' because this is pretty funky. That first link includes - 'Etymology: Corruption of God′s truth. Compare: zounds, blimey.' --------------- So my *random* example of a regional and strange (to me) expression streuth is connected to my earlier quoted one blimey 8...

The A in ABTC is for APEC not ASEAN, Myanmar is not a member of APEC, same goes for Cambodia and Laos who are ASEAN members but not APEC.

Re: Travel to Amsterdam

Yep can happen most busy places in Europe, I had about 50 euros lifted in Madrid a few years back, luckily my wallet with cards and more cash was in a different and fastened pocket. In Barcelona I had a teenage girl try to grab my passport from a pocket while on a subway escalator, luckily I felt he...

Re: Quotes

That reminds of David Mitchell talking about British customer service, sort of the reverse of the idea of insincere US service :)

To answer what I think (or hope) was actually SE's question, no you are not seeing things, it really does look like an enormous fiery penis.

Re: Travel to Amsterdam

Well I vaguely knew who Anne Frank was but had never read her diary and still found the museum interesting. As it is effectively an old house, it is pretty small and cramped with the number of visitors so if standing in queues (not just for tickets but as you make your way round as well) is not your...

Re: Travel to Amsterdam

If you're into museums there are a fair few interesting ones in Amsterdam. The Rijksmuseum for general history/culture stuff. The Van Gogh and Anne Frank museums for more specific topics. For the latter two I'd recommend booking your tickets in advance to skip what can be very long queues for ticket...

Re: ALMOST Denied Entry to Singapore by the ICA

I think the point ecureilx is trying to make is that whatever your actual objectives, your travel patterns fit those of the "ladies" he describes. You making it a point of visiting Indonesia/Malaysia for one day before leaving Singapore makes it look like you are doing a visa run, do it often enough...

Re: Getting new british passport/new pages in SG

Tell me about it :) When I applied for UK permanent residence (or indefinite leave to remain as they insist on calling it) a number of years ago I had to book an appointment to submit my paperwork. This involved ringing a phone number and being put on hold, if no one answered within 45 minutes they ...

Re: Getting new british passport/new pages in SG

On a slightly related question, I've got UK and NZ passports and the UK one is the one associated with my EP. When I come to renew the UK passport later this year can I change the EP details to the NZ passport? The update details form does mention changing nationality which I guess is what I'd be tr...
