This a great thread. Americans finding fault in other people's use of english. :D More seriously, I have a four-year old daughter, so I'm fighting a daily battle against peculiar use of words. Today's favourites: keep = put away reach = arrive on/off = switch on/switch off I can't decide if the abov...

Re: TV options please

I know this topic has been done before but I can't find anything recent so I hope someone can help me? What are my best options for cable and can I get UK TV at all, maybe via I-player or similar? We move in less than 2 weeks and would like to arrange things soon. Many thanks. From a fellow UK expa...

We've engaged two contractors in the last 2 years. First time to do a major A&A on our house; second time to do various odds jobs around the place. Main lessons learned: a) if you don't explicitly ask for something do be done upfront, expect the contractor to ask for ridiculous money when you vary y...

I moved from the UK to Singapore. When initially staying in an apartment, we noticed a big difference between the brick/concrete walls here and the stud partitioning in our old flat back in London. We couldn't hear anything from our adjacent neighbour here. There was a bit of upstairs noise, but not...

I don't really understand the local practice of engaging an agent to act for you as the tenant/buyer.

Most landlord-side agents will be advertising in the obvious places online and in print. You just need to check the websites and buy the Saturday paper.

Anyway, to update, I am going to proceed with the PR application. We were a bit disillusioned last night to see that the first available appointment for submitting the papers was in the last week in November. But thanks to joannajane's helpful advice, we checked the system again this morning and gra...

Actually, our oldest has just turned 4 years old, so, with decisions about schooling in mind, this is genuinely a 'where do we want to live permanently' thing. Anyway, thanks for all the replies - the Doctor's input was especially appreciated! I'll revisit this thread if I do apply for PR so as to g...

Goodness me. I complacently assumed that the usual Singaporean efficiency would make for a processing time of a few weeks. (I recall that the PEP took about two weeks to come through.) We'd better decide if PR is the way forward. Perhaps foolishly, we figure that I should apply for permanent residen...
