Re: Can we afford to relocate?

I also have to disagree with a couple of things that curiousgeorge says. But the comparison with local salaries still stands - any expat *could* live in an HDB and shop at the wet markets and save a ton. AND still have a higher standard of living then they did back in the UK. Living in an HDB block ...

Off topic, but the Singpass is a great idea. And government IT in general is very good here.

Re: Re: Got my SPR, and then what?

When I became a a PR last year, they sent me a new Singpass through the post unsolicited.

The old Singpass still works, bizarrely.

Re: UK EXPAT - ELECTORAL REGISTER - HIRE CAR PROBLEM

I've sent the DVLA an email to see if they can shed any light on this issue. Text as follows (for future reference, in case this absent when I come to paste their reply). Hi I have two driver licensing queries that I am hoping you can help with. 1) I recently moved overseas. I noted that the DVLA w...

Re: RE: Re: Why doesn't Singapore remember World War II?

. It was more that WWII, as it impacted on Singapore, hardly gets a mention even though thousands died here. This is clearly deliberate. Errrr...... Did you miss the remembrance in Kranji? No, but that's a decidedly British-led thing. Anyway, to answer my own question, this article is quite interes...

Re: Why doesn't Singapore remember World War II?

Just to be clear: I wasn't thinking that SIngapore ought to be commemorating VE Day. That's obviously a European thing.

It was more that WWII, as it impacted on Singapore, hardly gets a mention even though thousands died here. This is clearly deliberate.

Re: Why doesn't Singapore remember World War II?

Yesterday was the 70th anniversary of VE day. There were commemorations across Europe. It got me wondering: why doesn't Singapore make any real attempt to remember the second world war? Many thousands of people died here to defend and then liberate the country. Nothing happens here by accident, so ...

Re: Why doesn't Singapore remember World War II?

That's the only narrative my wife has: Singapore was abandoned by the British.

Mention Sook Ching, Lim Bo Seng or Operation Tiderace, and she's a complete blank.

Re: UK EXPAT - ELECTORAL REGISTER - HIRE CAR PROBLEM

Martin: I think this thread highlights that I haven't thought about this as much as I should! I switched everything (bank accounts, credit cards, driving licence, etc.) to my parents at the point when I moved in 2009. The only time I have driven in the UK since than was 2010 - I won't take matters a...

I've only driven once in the UK since I moved to Singapore (in 2010) and, to be honest, I didn't give the matter any thought. I was driving my parents car, not a hire car.

Re: UK EXPAT - ELECTORAL REGISTER - HIRE CAR PROBLEM

The answers to your questions are no and no. I figured the requirement for a 'permanent' address was based around ensuring that fines, disqualifications, etc. would get to me - which is what my parents address does.

Re: UK General Election (7-May) - timeline in SG

The seats are very close. We're looking coallition government again, but it's anyone's guess whether it will be Labour- or Conservative-led. I'm debating what time I should get up. The exit poll will come out at 5am, but then nothing much will happen until around 6.30am when the race to be first to ...

Re: UK EXPAT - ELECTORAL REGISTER - HIRE CAR PROBLEM

Here's my 2 cents, based on personal experience... I obtained a Singapore licence back in 2010 by taking the theory test and converting my UK licence. The Singapore authorities didn't take my UK licence, nor, to my knowledge, did they enter into any contact with the DVLA. As far as the DVLA are conc...
