Re: Singapore elderly?

I was this person. Living overseas and interacting with other cultures transform my personality. It took decades of hard work on my part to unlearn these bad habits. I am one of the lucky one cause I have met many overseas Singaporeans who are still stuck in a rut. And also, it is not normal nor hea...

Re: Singapore elderly?

Confucianism is a philosophy and social structure that lays out the code of conduct and social responsibilities of members of the society. It is an attempt to create a peaceful and orderly society. Widely endorsed within the Japanese culture and not so much by the Chinese. Although the latter, espec...

Re: Good/bad things about Singapore

Oops, wrong thread but nevertheless, relevant. Which brings up another point. Unlike Japan and the Netherlands, Singapore is not an intrinsincally-driven culture. They put up all kinds of silly laws, fines and fear tactics to elicit good behaviors from its citizens. Which, of course, is a bad way to...

Re: Good/bad things about Singapore

There is a similar law in Singapore. The regressiveness of these 2 countries make it difficult for the progressive-minded to live there :) .

Re: Good/bad things about Singapore

Coming from the Netherlands and Japan, your greatest culture shock will probably be the corner-cutting culture. Think of it as a mini version of China. It is not as extreme but will affect all facets of your daily life there. People don't apply themselves and try to put their best foot forward in th...

Re: Outburst

I was told of this Japanese parenting tip. Parent would offer the crying / traumatized child a lollipop (or any item that soothes the child) to calm him / her down. And only proceed to talk over the incident / trauma after the child has calmed down. It's a process, teaching them to manage their diff...

Re: Singapore elderly?

The more mercenary the culture, the more problematic it is for those who are economically-unproductive to survive. I saw this coming for countries like Singapore and China. Where money is everything, and sometimes even more important than one's life. Ironically, the Confucian concept of filial piety...

Re: The Donald ... Getting stuff Done!!!

Damned if we do, damned if we don't. Painful but necesssary? For the Americans. Or perhaps, we should pass the burden to Russia and China. Eh ? Yes, a burden indeed. Shouldered by many young and healthy men. Who had to confront war, only to return home infflicted with PTSD and unable to function in ...
