In "winter" it's the rainy season around here. If you don't want to go too far I would suggest the western part of Thailand.

And you must be wrong about the location, because Oosters is not far from Oosters.

You can rent movies at "Alliance Française" (and if you want to buy you can go to Carrefour, they always have some).
Or you can subscribe to TV5 which is available on StarHub cable TV... Probably the cheapest option.

Be aware that Canadian French is quite different from French language!

on another note, whereas expats in the past preferred staying in expat enclaves, i'm seeing many more expats in my housing estate, on the buses, in heartland shopping centres etc these days. 5 years ago they would have gotten stares, today nobody seems to notice. quite a pleasant sign of increasing...

They are usually not very close from the MRT stations (no trains here, but MRT which you can compare with "metro" or subway) but almost every school offers bus services. Unless you live in a remote area where no school buses are going, you should be fine. Just a suggestion: check on the school's web...

Last night while we were having a drink in a pub in Antwerp a lot of people were talking about that event of course... Quite scary.

For the rest everything is OK, weather is beautiful and the beers are cold. What else to ask for?
