Re: PR approved after 8 Months

Funny, but that is what everyone told my wife (then GF) back when we were in the states and her visa was running out. They literally asked her… any chance you could marry an American? I kid you not. I’d have done it too, but she had to come back here anyway, so here we are.

Re: Where will you retire?

For myself, I am a city guy and not really cut out for rural life. I will probably retire in a city or a suburb. I plan to retire here in SG but it depends on my daughter. I am one of those who got PR when it was easy but the privilege was not extended to my child who was rejected multiple times an...

Re: Is it worth to pay tuition via Zoom?

My wife manages all the tutors, fortunately I don’t get involved (if I was, there wouldn’t be any tutors :)). According to her, in the early days a few of the tutors were willing to give up the transport, what amounted to around a $20 discount. Others gave some extra time (which I think is the minim...

Re: Is it worth to pay tuition via Zoom?

If you commute into the office for work, you spend 9-10 hours there. The portion of your salary that considers your transportation expenditure is but a small fraction of your overall pay packet. Compare that to a dedicated “house call” for a 1.5 to 2 hour session. The portion of the fee that conside...

Re: Where will you retire?

I think these are great points about stability in your 70s and 80s. I'm on a Facebook group for foreigners and retirees in Malaysia and there was this one woman looking for ways to jet in and out of various Asian countries on tourist visas for the rest of her life. I told her that it was sheer madn...

Re: Where will you retire?

This thread is very interesting as I read the comments from a little town in Washington state, about a block from BC, Canada (where I spend a lot of my time before the pandemic). I had this same conversation with friends in Singapore back in 2013 after completing my 25th year there. I had also live...

Have you been to Tanjong Beach Club?
In my younger days… yes, and at least one good story to tell, but not on this forum ;)

Re: Where will you retire?

The fact that I can apply for and get SGC even though I've retired is a bonus I didn't count on and am seriously thinking of taking advantage of it (retired parents of Singapore citizens (I have two of them). I think the policies have gotten more family focused over the years, which is a good thing...

Re: The Best Beaches in Singapore

I’ve always preferred Tanjong beach compared to the others in Sentosa. It always seems a little more private and less crowded, maybe because it’s harder to get to being right at the end. The other one I like is Changi Beach, for the same reasons… Changi Village is just steps away and has some good e...

Re: Where will you retire?

I’ve yet to be convinced that any whole city the US is comprehensively more expensive than Singapore on a true like for like basis. Housing is typically going to be your largest expense. NYC is probably the closest, but you really need to zoom in on Manhattan specifically (which, to be fair, can rea...

Re: Covid numbers are still high

Some years are worse than other. Not everybody get the annual flu vaccine. I've never had one. But just like Covid, it's mostly the elderly and those with underlying issues. Sama-sama. Flu deaths in US pa.jpg You’ve never gotten the flu vaccine? Why not? In my mind the flu is one of the most preven...

Re: Is it worth to pay tuition via Zoom?

My kid does it. For a discount. That is very reasonable. I refused to do zoom with the tutors cos they didn't offer a discount.. Think about it from the tutors perspective. How are they supposed to make a living if they subsidize all the fees? True, but if they are saving on their time and transpor...

Re: Is it worth to pay tuition via Zoom?

From our experience, it has worked ok, we estimate 80-90% effective compared to in-person. The problem is, tutors willing to give a discount are in the minority (especially those that are in demand). More commonly, they are willing to provide extra time at no cost. But it depends on the tutor. The p...
