Re: Australian citizenship process for newborn in SG to Australian parents

Yes, exactly. Fortunately I am married to a US citizen and my retirement plans no longer involve Australia. Compared to Australia, the US is not exactly a panacea, but at least you’ve got more options and taxes are not as stiff (for now anyway). If your wife has or can get in 10 years of Social Sec...

Re: SCDF ambulances are under strain

It's only recently that Ambulances (and only SCDF) were legally permitted to run red lights. That is crazy! I guess that’s why I’ve often heard it said here that getting in a taxi is often a better bet if you need to get to the hospital fast. US ambulance drivers are all trained to do whatever it t...

Re: SCDF ambulances are under strain

Can anyone explain to me why ambulances in Singapore will turn on their lights and siren, and then stop and wait patiently at the red light? It just blows my mind! They don't on urgent cases (P1) according to my son. Must be a lower priority. Then why do they keep their emergency lights flashing if...

Re: Buying a HDB or Condominium?

Malcontent, thanks for that. It is nothing terrible then and if the property has made a profit quite manageable. For buying a private property here you may be able to borrow the deposit against your substantial stock portfolio at a good rate (the stocks become collateral). However I think we all kn...

Re: Buying a HDB or Condominium?

Well interesting you should say that. We are in en enbloc and every time I say to my US wife.... hey the next place we can put in your name to save ABSD she has a mini meltdown about the eventual tax paperwork and cost. How bad is the CGT going to be on a property gain in Singapore for a US citizen...

Re: Buying a HDB or Condominium?

The primary reason I have avoided buying a HDB is that they cannot be used as collateral. You cannot borrow against your equity in a HDB but you can borrow against equity in a freehold, 999 and 99 year lease private property. I borrowed 150k about 3 years ago to renew COE, pass off an Australian mo...

Re: Does Singapore allow dual permanent residency? (SG and US)

From what I can see, the answer is yes, they do permit it. They basically only care about how much time you spend in Singapore and if you are still contributing. Stop contributing and they will reduce the duration of your re entry permit at renewal or not renew it at all. I know people who this hap...

Re: Buying a HDB or Condominium?

There is an easy way to fix the rising HDB prices, increase the supply! Instead, in the news they were talking about restricting certain people from buying HDBs in certain popular districts ](*,) It’s the same thing with schools, they keep merging and reducing schools here until there aren’t enough ...

Re: DBS Non Existant Fraud Controls

The funniest scam calls that I get are the ones claiming that I owe money and a judgement is going to be entered against me if I don’t call within 24 hours. I’ve even received such calls seeking people who are family members, even in-laws (how they connect them to me, I don’t know). But, even if it ...

Re: DBS Non Existant Fraud Controls

By now everyone should know to ignore/block all unsolicited calls/texts. I even do this when it really is my actual bank calling… if it’s important enough they will leave a message or call me back a sufficient number of times that I become annoyed and pick up - - but even then… they are a suspect un...

Re: Where will you retire?

I remember you telling me that O levels are good enough for comm college. My wife doesn't believe it and she teaches at an American school here! I’m not surprised. Many locals here don’t know this can be done either, but I can tell you 100% that my wife did it — after O-Levels in Singapore she went...
