Re: Looking for golf partners

I'm no longer in Singapore but I can tell you that there are very few public course in Singapore, especially ones that you can afford. Most all of them require a golf handicap card or evaluation before they will let you play. Non members can play at Sentosa but for $370 for a round. Marina Bay is a ...

Re: Step down converter suggestions

Yes, you need a step down transformer that is at least 1380 watts. In actuality, you'll want a reserve built in, so at least 1500 watts, preferably closer to 1800 watts. Stay away from cheap Chinese crap. Seriously. Crappy transformers, wiring that's not heavy enough, improperly insulated. You need ...

Re: HR timeline

As expected, it was bad news. Checked in with HR yesterday, they informed they could not meet my terms (as in counter offer) but they did not reply last week when I asked. Asked if the old offer is still on the table but they said they rescinded it and they are now interviewing new people. Hm…. Wha...

Re: Working freelance in Singapore

The relevant part the the Singapore Income Tax act seems to be: Employment exercised in Singapore (4) The gains or profits from any employment exercised in Singapore shall be deemed to be derived from Singapore whether the gains or profits from such employment are received in Singapore or not. This...

Re: Working freelance in Singapore

One more thing, and in a separate post to avoid confusing the foreign income thread, income tax evasion is not limited to Singapore expats... DP, EP, LTVP, PR... it's also something that Singapore citizens do. Every self employed person in Singapore has the potential to be a tax evader. Keep foreign...

Re: Working freelance in Singapore

Maybe you're "I not troll/wacko/spammer" (although your posts suggest that is exactly what you are) but you are for sure a fool. Worse, instead of simply admitting that you have misinformation, you continue to insist that your position is correct. You continue to mislead people. I ran a company in S...

@BBCDoc... thanks for bringing up the probability of thrombotic events with Covid. I fibbed to get my third Moderna booster... mainly because I have both breathing issues and Factor V Leiden, which has already caused me a DVT and PE... I don't need any more of that.

Yeh... I found that out about my Roth IRA's... but my accountant said, "We made the error, if the IRS comes back with penalties, we will pay them. But, after I reversed everything out on an amended return, I never heard another word.

Re: Working freelance in Singapore

I certainly don't want to spread misinformation, but I have heard the opposite from several trustworthy real life people with regards to taxes. This includes a lawyer, and someone who was told this in a phone call with IRAS and recorded the conversation. I would love to find a definitive answer on ...

Re: Working freelance in Singapore

AFAIK you don't need to set up any company or sole proprietorship, you don't need to file tax returns or pay tax, and you don't even need to tell the government. See https://anza.org.sg/2018/04/26/the-set-up/ You really shouldn't be spreading misinformation like this. It's simply false. It is true ...

With a wife of now 43+ years, an NRA account was a non-starter!

I did learn the hard way that the earned income exclusion doesn't apply to joint incomes. :x

Re: American EP holders, how do you invest?

malcontent has provided lots of details. As an American, you can invest in virtually anything throughout the world via US exchanges and trading entities. ETF's out the wazoo. I'm an American who spent 8 years in Singapore. I never could identify local Singapore investments that made more sense than ...

Wait a minute... are you talking about "fresh" FOREIGN graduates? How many do you think there are? How many who graduated intended to immediately work on EP?

This sounds fishy to me.

Re: Population in Brief 2021

Interesting numbers. First, the average total permanent resident population in Singapore is about 500,000 (488,700 IN 2020, 521,000 IN 2019). So, if you look at PR's granted, it works out to be a pretty solid 6 percent of the total PR population each year. Second, in comparing PR's granted to citize...
