Re: Learning Chinese in Singapore (adults)

https://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/clslang/home I did a Korean course with the private educational arm of NUS (National University of Singapore) several years ago, was run pretty professionally and had a good group that facilitated learning together. Would recommend you to check this out! Great lead, thank...

R&D tax rebate for a startup

Sooo, after the first year in operation, my Singaporean company filed its first tax assessment last year. We had some profit, and because new companies under a threshold of S$1 million in revenue are entitled to no tax, all is good. We're a tech startup though, and apparently, there are also tax reb...

Stopping IRS junk mail

A minor inconvenience to resolve, maybe the American folks here may offer some advice. I lived in the US on a working visa for a couple of years before moving to Singapore in late 2017. Being law-obedient and stuff, I made it a point to pay my US taxes for 2017 (even though it was a highway-robbery ...

Thanks, archcherub.

you reply that "with the greatest respect, you feel that moving jurisdiction away from Singapore is a very brave proposal that is not right at this time but that you will keep it in mind in the future" read: https://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/life-and-relationships/with-the-greatest-respect-why-ameri...

Re: Social engineering: convincing stateside Americans that Singapore is not horrible

Well, how do you explain that to someone who believes it's a town in China where they cane people for chewing gums?

Social engineering: convincing stateside Americans that Singapore is not horrible

Addressing primarily the American populace here. I am running a small tech startup here in Singapore, but we're active globally. I have some ties to the US, and we also have a representative on the East Coast. We still look for affiliates, but it's a very particular niche, so we grab onto any match ...

Learning Chinese in Singapore (adults)

(To moderators: not sure if it's the right subforum to post into, but it seems to be the closest. My apologies if it's a wrong one.) My wife and I want to take advantage of being in a (sorta) Anglophone country with a strong Chinese presence, and learn Chinese at the conversational and eventually bu...

Re: Chewing gum for medicinal purposes - where to get?

I may be having a brain fart, and I seem to remember gum on the counter of this dental group that I used to use. https://smilefocus.com.sg/ Not a brain fart. I left a message on their website, and, amazingly, they called me back within an hour (how is that possible - people who know to open and rea...

Re: Chewing gum for medicinal purposes - where to get?

b) It used to be that dentists in Singapore sold gum. Is this no longer the case? I was very excited about the possibility, and asked two today. They were very surprised about the weirdo ang mo ideas. I suspect the ancient Singaporean proverb applies here, "if you see a queue, join it". Probably on...

Re: Chewing gum for medicinal purposes - where to get?

All pharmacies stock it. Show up with ID and ask the pharmacist. Only sugar free is stocked and you'll be limited to a quantity. Edit I am out of date. Sorry go across causeway. Well yeah, that's why I'm asking. Thankfully, I go overseas once in a while, but a chewing gum trip to JB is a bit absurd...

Chewing gum for medicinal purposes - where to get?

I grew up in 1980s, loathing the sight of the kewl dudes chewing bubble gums. I never liked the feeling, the taste, or anything else. Also, I am a law-obedient guy who does not wish to disrupt the yin and yang in the place where I live. However... As I'm running a small business here with a stressfu...

Re: Keeping business records - electronic-only

Proof. Don't forget, scanned files have a creation date as well as last modified dates, etc. computer forensics can verify the dates of the scans and anybody who would start fudging documents 6 or 7 years before you plan one filing a bogus set of books seems a bit farfetched to me. ;-) That's what ...

Keeping business records - electronic-only

OK, it's a simple one. As my business is starting to take off, so is the number of receipts and invoices. It's XXI century obviously, and most of the paperwork has no actual paper involved, but there is still some. The accounting software has the option to keep electronic attachments which I use to ...
