Re: IGCSE tuition centers in Singapore

The problem with tuition centres here in Singapore is that they actually cater to the bigger market - the Singapore GCE "O" and "A" Levels exams (which is tougher and deeper in scope than the iGCSE). So it is not that there are no quality centres. It is that you have to be prepared for your kid to s...

Re: Grade 5 Boy Falls to Death after Failing Exams for the First Time

The fortunate thing is she takes to it well and even wants more. I keep telling her, whatever grades she gets it won’t make a big difference, as she is bound for the US after JC. The Singapore educational system is very suited to very competitive and very focused children. The rest tend to suffer s...

Re: Grade 5 Boy Falls to Death after Failing Exams for the First Time

I used to teach in a local government school (and still occasionally do, as an adjunct teacher) and I am not going to say there are no bullying happening in government schools. After all, I have personally been in involved in handling some of these cases, as the Head of Pastoral Care in the school. ...

Re: Local schools for foreigner

Unfortunately, I think the chances are very slim. And even so, if your child does gain admission into a local school, it will probably be one of the less reputable, less popular options among locals (hence the vacancies). You can pretty much forget about the name brand schools like RGPS, MGS, or NY...

Re: Why so many miscellaneous purchases at school?

Are you happier now, having p Proved something that's very subjective? https://www.cnbc.com/2017/07/14/the-5-highest-and-lowest-paying-states-for-teachers-in-the-us.html We are paid very well compared to teachers in many nations. But the amount of work is seriously crazy. And no, I am still not hap...

Erm poorly paid is pretty much a relative thingy?

But teachers in mainstream schools are sure stressed out with both teaching and managing CCAs. :(
Definitely overworked and underpaid, but not "poorly paid".

Re: Seeking an AEIS training course/class

I know of two schools (both run by people I know personally, and whose education philosophies I can vouch for). Barclyne College International - http://www.barclyne.edu.sg/ , run by a Chinese-born Singaporean Principal Mr Liu. Eden Learning Place - https://www.edenlearningplace.com/ , run by an ex-S...

Re: Tanglin or Dulwich?

The last option is kind of appealing, and my children have both requested homeschooling. It just depends on how much of my sanity I still have after mothering them for the last decade already   My wife used to homeschool for several years. The benefits were obvious, but it was extremely...

Re: Tanglin or Dulwich?

I think Tanglin has better sports programs than Dulwich - having trawled through the sport competition results for the inter-school comps (because my oldest is sports-mad), Tanglin came up more often than Dulwich Hill which I assume means more teams and a bigger program. Uh, Tanglin started in Sing...
