Re: Where to live? US family with 2 small children

I would suggest looking at condos along the downtown line eg: The Sterling, Maplewoods etc. it takes 20 minutes or so on downtown line to suntec city and these places are near to good schools such as Dover, Tanglin and many more at turf city. They are also near to holland village for your wife, and ...

Re: am i getting scammed

Usually I will take pictures of almost every nook and corner as the landlord/agent looks through the place during handover. I have had a few rude stares from them before, but after a terrible experience with a LL once, this has become a must-do. Agreed. I photograph everything. At least 100/+ pics ...

Re: am i getting scammed

For future reference I would NEVER recommend accepting a refund of deposit after inspection. Tenants should insist a cheque or cash refund be provided at handover/final inspection JUST AS THE LL expects you to have a cheque or cash in hand when collecting keys (note that cheque fraud / bouncing is ...

Help with setting up house rules for a helper

We will likely take a slightly different approach than most, focusing our search on older, more experienced transfer helpers at the higher end of the usual budget with the hope that they'll be need less micromanaging, especially in personal matters. I think a lot of people think we're silly, ideali...

Re: Where to get a diamond ring in Singapore

I've looked at Blue Nile, a big site, though not recently. IIRC it's more of an open market-place, so I'd want to be very clear who anyone (the specific dealer) I'm buying from is. But yes, definitely worth using as a reference point, and perhaps a source. Can someone give me the specs on a stone c...

Where to get a diamond ring in Singapore

I would skip Tiffany totally. Blue Nile has some good prices that is you are willing to take the risk of buying it without having seen it. I believe they have a return or exchange policy. I could not remember the last time I wore my ring. It's kept in the safe since Baby 1 was born. Just saying .......

Re: 5 cent coins - legal tender?

The admin charges for 5 cents coin deposits way exceed the total value of any bag of 5 cent coins as banks' charges are per coin instead of per total value.

Re: 5 cent coins - legal tender?

Periodically I will bring my boxes of coins ($1, 0.50, 0.20 etc) to the hawkers in my neighbourhood and exchange them for notes. They love it as this means one less trip to the bank, and less charges. In fact, most hawkers donate their 5 cent coins to charity (the only one who will take them really ...

Re: Where to get a diamond ring in Singapore

And size does not matter. Personally I can tell the difference between color grades at one or two glance and it's particularly obvious when the stone is big. For size usually the price increases sharply at 0.5 mark so you should look for sizes around 0.45-0.49, 0.95-0.99, 1.45-1.49, 1.95-199 etc. eg...

Re: Where to get a diamond ring in Singapore

Go to Larrys at Ion. They have Lazare diamonds there and the price and quality is better than what you see at Tiffany. Look for Tony. I bought my diamond from him and he's been working there for a very long time. He will also take the time to explain the Cs of diamond hunting for you. In fact the qu...

Re: Organising a company and structure- legality

Brilliant answer Strong Eagle!

I personally would like to contribute CPF as long as I can - it's money locked away far from uncontrolled spending habits, and the interest is generous.

CPF (Maximum Contribution)??

I've been managing an online business for the last 5 years, and paying myself a salary of S$11 000 per month. As a SPR, my monthly CPF contribution is S$1800 which I believe is the max amount for CPF contribution. I'm now keen to develop a business in teaching, and have signed up as a supply teacher...

Re: What's with the live-in maids?!

If you read the local forums on maids you will find that a lot of Singaporeans prefer not to have a live in maid. There's an entire thread devoted on how they could prepare themselves bit by bit towards the goal of not having a maid soon. Quite a number hiring maids are those with young children and...
