Re: Am I insane to spend this much on rent with my salary

I don’t think peer advice makes sense. You should rent this place. You will either learn a valuable lesson or be happy. Both are good in ur case. If I had to do this, I would rent a cheaper condo for now. And set a dream condo as a goal. Once I felt financially comfortable I would go for it. Luxurie...

Re: Watching a movie in the cinema

Per person? Last time when I was in the cinema, year ago or so, it was ca SGD13-15 per ticket. I quickly checked GV and still see it in that range. Gold class in GV is 43$. But with HSBC card , u can get for 34.5$. Since last year, we only saw 5-6 movies but we chose to go to Suntec City Gv gold cl...

Re: Watching a movie in the cinema

Bring a big sack of gold. You'll get a shock when you see how much they charge for a movie ticket nowadays. Pricing is ridiculous. Upwards of $40, and thats not even including snacks or drinks. Per person? Last time when I was in the cinema, year ago or so, it was ca SGD13-15 per ticket. I quickly ...

Re: Impulse purchase

This is an interesting discussion. I consider myself frugal but not at the level of WD40. We live in a HDB, have no car, have no maid, and most of our appliances are more than 10 years old. I am averse to any type of loan except for the HDB mortgage. We basically accumulated a respectable net worth...

Re: Impulse purchase

Napoleon Hill said that the reason why most people dont reach their full potential is because they listen to their teachers, parents, relatives, friends , etc. My dad is frugal and always preaches to live within means. However, if you read Rich Dad Poor Dad, you will realise that most of our parents...

Re: Impulse purchase

What WD40 describes is the kinda of life we led in India where my dad was too extreme in spending n savings. It only works if the entire family is in sync. If the wife or kids disagree or feel unhappy, then it leads to misery. Savings is fine but experiences are worth it too. Our rule is different....

Re: 90% of people would never want to come to office fulltime again!

I think there shd be a balance . Occasional WFH or Flexi timing like go to office at 11/12 after meetings is usually the case for me. But to totally not go to Work is detrimental. How about Home Schooling. Smart people like Elon Musk homeschool their kids. Why not let kids study at home ? I think it...

Re: Impulse purchase

True, an extremely thrifty lifestyle also makes sense if the entire family is on board, otherwise it will just lead to unhappiness and disagreements. Not generalising, just talking about Indian families. If u look at Philippines or Korea, women manage the house even if not working. I am not judging...

Re: Do expats here eat durians?

I tried Durian and honestly, it was not tasty for me. In a way, I am glad cuz its really one of the costly fruits. I usually only eat Berries now due to low carb - strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. I dont eat other fruits and never drink juice.
